NAZ Suns Complete Trade with Austin Spurs

PRESCOTT VALLEY, Ariz. - The Northern Arizona Suns announced today that they have completed a trade with the Austin Spurs.

The Suns acquired the returning player rights to forwards Livio Jean-Charles and Hollis Thompson from the Spurs in exchange for the returning player rights to guards Isaiah Canaan and Josh Gray.

Jean-Charles (6-9, 230 pounds) has most recently played for the ASVEL Lyon-Villeurbanne, who plays in the top-tier level in the French Pro-A league. In 2018-19 so far, he has tallied seven points and three rebounds in 25 minutes in one game. He also played one game in the EuroCup, posting six points and four rebounds.

The French forward was a first round pick (28th overall) in the 2013 NBA Draft, selected by the San Antonio Spurs. He played three Summer Leagues with San Antonio and played five games during the 2016-17 preseason. He became an affiliate player for the Austin Spurs in 2016-17, where he played two years. Overall in the NBA G League, the 25-year-old has played in 90 regular season games (46 starts), averaging 10.6 points on 55.5 percent shooting and 5.6 rebounds in 23.3 minutes per game.

Thompson (6-8, 206 pounds) most recently played for Olympiacos in the Greek A1 Basket League and the EuroLeague, where he averaged 7.1 points and 2.9 rebounds in 44 games (16 starts). That was his only year 2017-18) played professionally overseas following stints with several NBA and NBA G League clubs.

Thompson, 27, has been a member of the Oklahoma City Thunder, Philadelphia 76ers and New Orleans Pelicans. He has also been on the Summer League rosters for the San Antonio Spurs, 76ers, LA Clippers and Detroit Pistons, as recent as 2017. Thompson enjoyed his best year in the NBA in 2015-16, where he averaged 9.8 points and 3.5 rebounds in 77 games (17 starts) for the 76ers. In 265 regular season games (90 starts) in the NBA, Thompson averaged 7.7 points and 3.1 rebounds.

The former Georgetown forward has played 64 games over two years in the NBA G League, 2012-13 with the Tulsa 66ers and 2016-17 with the Austin Spurs. For the Spurs, Thompson averaged 14.4 points on 48.6 percent shooting, including a 43.9 percent mark from three-point range, and 4.9 rebounds in 16 games.

Canaan and Gray were the fourth and sixth call-ups to the NBA in NAZ Suns history, respectively. They both were called up by the Phoenix Suns last season. Canaan played one game for Northern Arizona in 2017-18, while Gray has the most career points (1,544), assists (522), steals (184) and minutes played (2,790) in Northern Arizona Suns history. He averaged 16.3 points, 5.5 assists, 4.1 rebounds and 1.9 steals in 95 games (37 starts) over his two years (2016-18) with the NAZ Suns.
