The Kansas City Royals announced Tuesday morning that Josh Johnson, who served as a reserve infielder for the Naturals in 2009, has been given his release from the Royals organization. Johnson now becomes a minor league free agent.
Johnson, a 24-year old resident of Tampa, FL, batted a combined.220 with 13 RBI in 63 games in 2009, spending most of the season with the Naturals but also playing in 12 games with Advanced Class-A Wilmington.
Originally a third-round selection of the Royals in the June 2004 draft, Johnson batted.241 with ten homers and 187 RBI in 498 career minor league games played in the Royals' system. His father, Larry, played in the Major Leagues for parts of five seasons (1972-78) with the Cleveland Indians, Montreal Expos, and the Chicago White Sox.
