Corpus Christi Hooks News Release
No. 9 hitter Adam Donachie went 4-for-4 and Blake Wood held the Hooks to one run through the first seven Monday night as Northwest Arkansas turned a seven-run third inning into a 9-2 triumph over Corpus Christi at Arvest Ballpark.
The Hooks, 5-12 in the second half, have lost six straight to the Naturals and seven of their last 10 games.
Corpus Christi starter Brad James, who had gone a minimum of five innings in all but one of his 16 starts, navigated through the first two frames with ease before his night came to an abrupt end. James yielded back-to-back singles and a walk to open the third. He then hit Marc Maddox with a pitch, tying the score at one. Mario Lisson gave Northwest Arkansas the lead by coaxing a bases-loaded walk.
After Lisson's at-bat, James began favoring his arm, prompting a visit from skipper Luis Pujols and athletic trainer Jamey Snodgrass. James (6-6) exited the game, giving way to reliever Jose Oyervidez. Kila Kaaihue greeted the right-hander with a sacrifice fly to left field, putting the Naturals up by two.
Consecutive singles from Juan Richardson and Cory Aldridge made it 5-1. With two out, Ed Lucas and Donachie capped the outburst with RBI singles, giving both two hits in the frame
Aldridge added to the advantage in the fifth by belting his first home run of the season, a two-run shot to right field.
Wladimir Sutil provided the Hooks a short-lived lead in the third. After opening with a single, the speedy shortstop stole second and advanced to third thanks to a passed ball. Drew Sutton, 2-for-4 on the night, promptly plated Sutil with a base hit to center.
Corpus Christi grounded into two double plays, thwarting rallies in the fourth and sixth.
In the ninth, Val Majewski hit his third home run as a Hook, an impressive blast that cleared the bullpen in right field. Majewski has hit safely in 12 of his 13 games with Corpus Christi.
Wood (2-3) scattered six hits over seven innings to secure the victory. He struck out the side in the seventh, five in total, and did not walk a batter.
Oyervidez was charged with four runs and 10 hits through four. Sean Walker logged two innings of shutout relief.
Chance Douglass (4-6) is scheduled to start the series finale for the Hooks Tuesday night. Northwest Arkansas counters with Julio Pimentel (3-9).
