WOODBRIDGE, VA (JUNE 29, 2011) - Destin Hood's tenth inning RBI single scored Eury Perez from third base and sent the Nationals to walk-off 4-3 victory over the Dash on Wednesday night at Pfitzner Stadium. After winning several games this season against the P-Nats with late-inning rallies, the Winston was served a defeat by the same medicine in the series opener.
With the score tied at three in the bottom of the tenth inning, J.R. Ballinger walked the speedy Perez and then gave up a double to Francisco Soriano to put two men into scoring position. After a groundout by Jeff Kobernus, Hood lined a 2-1 offering down the left field line for a base hit. Perez easily scored from third, sparking a Nationals celebration on the field.
Potomac (3-4, 32-44) scored the game's first run in the bottom of the second inning against Winston starter Justin Collop. Justin Bloxom started in the frame with a single and later scored on an RBI double off the bat of Steven Souza to break the scoreless tie.
The Dash (4-2, 36-40) immediately tied the contest in the top of the third. With Tyler Saladino at second base and two outs, Jared Mitchell singled off Evan Bronson to drive in the runner and level the ballgame. Winston grabbed the lead two innings later on an RBI triple from Saladino.
The P-Nats got to Collop for two more runs in the sixth inning. Soriano walked and Kobernus singled to start the frame. Two batters later, Justin Bloxom and Justino Cuevas produced back-to-back run-scoring hits to send Potomac to a 3-2 lead.
Mike Blanke tied the game up on Bronson's first pitch of the seventh inning. The Dash catcher blasted a line drive home run over the fence in left field to square the game once again. The homer was Blanke's second of the season since joining Winston-Salem.
After the Blanke home run, the next 12 Dash batters were retired in order by the combination of Bronson, Neil Holland, and Rob Wort. Wort (1-2) picked up the win for the Nationals with a perfect tenth inning. Ballinger (4-1) was charged with his first loss.
Prior to tonight's game, the Dash had won seven of ten games against the P-Nats, with five of those games won in the seventh inning or later.
The series continues on Thursday night when RHP Jake Petricka (--, --), the best starting pitching prospect in the White Sox system according to Baseball America, makes his Carolina League debut opposite RHP Paul Demny (4-7, 3.98). First pitch from Pfitzner Stadium is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. and the audio broadcast can be heard on www.wsdash.com beginning at 6:45.
The Dash return to BB&T Ballpark for a special Independence Day weekend filled with fireworks and fun on Saturday. Fireworks will follow each of the games on Saturday, Sunday, and Monday, with all games starting at 7 p.m.
