Frederick Keys News Release
The Keys dropped the opener of their six-game road trip, 5-3, on Wednesday night. Lynchburg's Geraldo Rodriguez belted a two-run shot of RHP Clay Schrader in the bottom of the eighth which put the Hillcats in front for good. In the losing effort, Justin Dalles went 3-for-4 with a RBI. Wednesday was Dalles' first start as a member of the Keys.
With RHP Ryohei Tanaka atop the hill for the Keys and RHP Zeke Spruill starting for the Hillcats, neither team scored until the fourth inning. With one out and one on, CF Miguel Abreu singled to right. On the play, Townsend advanced to third. LF Kipp Schutz then put the Keys on the board with a sac fly to center field. Two batters later, Justin Dalles singled home Abreu to give Frederick a two-run lead in the fourth.
After leaving four runners on base through the first four innings, the Hillcats finally got on the board in the fifth inning. 2B Phil Gosselin stepped to the plate with two outs and men on the corners. Gosselin doubled a Tanaka pitch over RF Steve Bumbry's head. Keenan Wiley and Marcus Lemon scored on the play and tied the game at two. 1B Joey Terdoslavich followed up Gosselin's double with a RBI single to right. Terdoslavich was thrown out at second as he tried to stretch his single into a double. After his head first slide, Terdoslavich exchanged a few words with field umpire Carlos Torres and was ejected from the game.
The Hillcats' lead was short lived. With two outs in the top of the sixth, Miguel Abreu crushed a Zeke Spruill offering over the left field fence. Abreu's second home run of the season tied the game at three.
Both starting pitchers departed Wednesday's game following their sixth inning of work. Ryohei Tanaka allowed three runs on nine hits while his counterpart, Zeke Spruill, allowed three runs on five hits.
Lynchburg failed to score in the seventh inning despite having runners on second and third with just one out. In the eighth, however, the Hillcats capitalized on one swing of the bat. With two down and C Christian Bethancourt on first, Geraldo Rodriguez hit a towering shot to left field to put the ¬ËCats on top. The home run came off Clay Schrader. The two runs off Schrader were the first he allowed as a Frederick Keys. Dating back to his time with Class-A Delmarva, Schrader had not allowed a run since April 19; a streak of 31 consecutive scoreless innings.
Frederick failed to score in the ninth as Ryan Buchter struck out the side. RHP Eliecer Cardenas picked up the win on the night while Schrader was saddled with the loss.
LHP Nick Haughian (4-4, 4.38) will take the hill for the Keys on Thursday night in Lynchburg. The Hillcats will turn to LHP Blaine Sims (2-1, 2.45). First pitch from City Stadium is set for 7:05 p.m.
