Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release
MYRTLE BEACH, SC - The Myrtle Beach Pelicans and Kinston Indians must have been having flashbacks. In their first meeting since their Carolina League-record 23-inning game in Kinston on June 12, they were headed to extra innings again. This one would not last nearly as long, however, as Jared Hoying's tenth-inning infield hit won the game 5-4 in front of 4,416 at BB&T Coastal Field.
The rally started when Vinny DiFazio greeted new K-Tribe reliever Chris Jones with a double down the left field line. The catcher was replaced by pinch-runner Andres James and after Mitch Hilligoss struck out on a fouled bunt attempt, Travis Adair reached on a Casey Frawley error at shortstop.
Jones intentionally walked Santiago Chirino to load the bases with one out before Hoying hit a Baltimore chop up the first base line. Jones came off the mound and fielded the ball needing a double play, but slumped his shoulders as James came across the plate with the winning run. Jones (4-1) took the loss, which is fitting considering that he was the winning pitcher in the June 12 marathon in Kinston.
Hoying's fourth hit was his third infield knock of the night and it was enough to give the Birds a series-opening victory that moves them into a second-half, first-place tie with Kinston at 5-2. DiFazio's leadoff double in the tenth was the only extra-base hit out of the Pelicans' 14 on the night. Leury Garcia and Chirino had two-hit games to go along with Hoying's four and DiFazio's three.
Johan Yan (4-1) capped a brilliant night for the bullpen with two scoreless frames to pick up the win. Before Yan gave up a pair of singles in the final inning, starter Justin Grimm and three Birds' relievers combined for five and two-thirds hitless innings.
Miguel De Los Santos had an electric debut for the Pelicans. The highly-touted lefty has fallen on hard times in 2011 and has gone from Double-A Frisco, to a rehab stint in the Arizona League to the Grand Strand. He posted a 1-2-3 seventh inning before striking out the side in the eighth. Trevor Hurley worked a perfect sixth inning with one strikeout in relief of Grimm.
It seemed like it would be a high-scoring affair in the early innings as both teams scored three times in the first three and a half. The two clubs exchanged first-inning tallies, Kinston plating one on a Jeremie Tice sacrifice fly before DiFazio evened the score for the Birds with a single to score Garcia.
Myrtle Beach jumped ahead with a run in both the second and third innings against starter Marty Popham, but the Indians rallied to tie it in the fourth. Four straight Kinston hitters reached with two outs, Abner Abreu singled and Chase Burnette added a run-scoring one of his own to cut the lead to 3-2. Grimm walked Doug Pickens to load the bases before walking nine-hitter Tyler Cannon to force in the tying run.
Three Kinston righties combined for five scoreless innings behind Popham. Kyle Landis worked a scoreless fifth and sixth before Rob Bryson did the same in the seventh and eighth. Closer Preston Guilmet capped a 1-2-3 ninth with a strikeout before passing the game over to Jones.
The second game of this three-game series is set for Thursday night. A couple of solid right-handers square off when Barret Loux (7-3, 3.44) goes for Myrtle Beach against Brett Brach (4-5, 3.11) of Kinston. First pitch at BB&T Coastal Field is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. Tickets for all Pelicans home games are available at the BB&T Coastal Field box office, MyrtleBeachPelicans.com, and by phone at 843-918-6000 or 877-918-TIXX.
