WOODBRIDGE, Va. -- Rain was threatening and the Nationals had a lead. All they had to do was hold it for three more outs, the game would have been official, and the Nationals might've walked away with a victory, but none of that happened as the Blue Rocks scored five times in the fifth en route to a 6-3 victory Tuesday night.
The Nationals were leading 3-0 on the back of Luke Montz' monster home run to left field in the bottom of the fourth.
Weather-radar watchers thought that the skies would open up shortly after the fifth and the game would be called with the Nationals leading but the rain held off until the eighth, after the floodgates had already opened on Potomac.
Jacoby Ellsbury drew a four-pitch walk with two out in the fifth, stole second and following two more walks was standing on third in a bases-loaded situation for Andrew Pinckney. Ellsbury then scored the Blue Rocks' first run when Jason Norderum (1-2) uncorked a wild pitch.
Pinckney then delivered a single to left to make it a one-run game before Norderum was lifted for Thomas Wilson who allowed back-to-back doubles before getting Iggy Suarez to fly out to end the inning. Five runs came across and the Nationals seemed to lose the fire.
Ender Chavez led off the fifth for the Nationals and would start a string of 12 consecutive batters Blue Rocks pitchers would send back to the dugout. Only a ninth-inning walk to Devin Ivany by Kyle Jackson would break that string
Andrew Dobies improved to a league-leading 3-0 and Jackson recorded his first save of the season.
The Nationals salute all active and retired military on Wednesday as part of Military Appreciation Night at 'The Pfitz'. Game time between the Nationals and Blue Rocks is 7:05 p.m.
