TONIGHT'S GAME:
The Hillcats continue a four-game series against the Kinston Indians with Game Two at Grainger Stadium...The Indians took the opener 5-1 in compelling fashion with a walk-off grand slam from Wyatt Toregas...The Hillcats have now lost 4 of their last 5 games...In addition, the team is now 3-3 in series openers...Despite the loss, Lynchburg is just 0.5-games back of the Potomac Nationals for first place in the Northern Division..All 4 Northern Division squads are seperated by a total of just 1 game in the standings... Kinston is the only team in the Carolina League with an above .500 record and the K-Tribe have posted a stellar 9-2 home mark....The two opponents on this road trip, Kinston and Myrtle Beach, have a combined 17-5 home mark...
TONIGHT'S MATCHUP
- LHP Brian Holliday (see page 4) looks to get the Hillcats back to .500 against RHP Jensen Lewis, who has suffered defeats in each of his last 2 outings.
- Lewis, 21, is a 6-3, 195-pound right-hander selected by Cleveland in the 3rd round of the 2005 draft out of Vanderbilt University. The Ohio native spent his first professional baseball with Mahoning Valley (A, NYPL) and went 4-2 with a 3.20 ERA (13 g, 11 gs, 59.0 ip, 58 h, 24 r, 21 er, 11 bb, 59 k). Lewis was originally drafted in the 33rd round of the 2002 draft by Cleveland but elected to attend Vanderbilt. This season, he has compiled a 1-2 mark with a 7.53 ERA (14.1 ip, 18 h, 15 r, 12 er, 6 bb, 10 k)
- Lewis was teammates at Vanderbilt with Indians 2004 first-round selection Jeremy Sowers.
NEWS AND NOTES:
Hillcats starters have gone 5-5 with a 3.00 ERA (69.0 ip/23 er) over the last 13 games...The starters had lasted at least 5.0 innings in 12 of those 13 games...RHPWardell Starling allowed just one run in 5.0 innings yesterday, dropping his ERA to 2.45...Mike Carlin hit the 25th grand slam in Hillcats history in the 9th inning last Tuesday night off Potomac LHP Jeremy Plexico...The slugger has reached base safely in each of his first 17 games (.304-3- 18) and leads the league with 18 RBIs....Dating back to last season, Carlin has reached base safely in 28 consecutive games...Brian Bixler has reached base safely in 9 straight games (11-30, .367-0-3)...Nyjer Morgan stole his league-leading 12th stolen base last night...In addition, the speedster went 1-for-4 in the game and has reached base safely in 7 of his last 8 games (9-26, .346-0-4)...The Cats were held to 5 hits yesterday...They have not recorded more than 7 hits in a game in their last 5 games (29 total)...
PITCHING 101
Potomac leads the league in hitting with a .255 team batting average...Kinston is the only other team in the CL with a team batting average above .250 (.252)...Kinston also leads the league in pitching with a staff ERA of 2.50...They are one of four teams (Frederick, Winston-Salem and Wilmington) that have a team ERA below 3.00...
2006 SERIES WITH KINSTON
Kinston leads the season series, 1-0. The Kinston Indians won the 2005 season series, 12-8. The Indians also won the 2004 season series, 11-8. However, the Hillcats won the 2003 matchup, 13-7. Lynchburg also dominated the 2002 series, 17-3, and then took the Mills Cup Series, 3-1. Overall, Lynchburg leads the lifetime series, 115-102 (.530).
