Potomac Nationals News Release
(WINSTON SALEM, NC) If the first three-game series ever played here are any indication, the Potomac Nationals are going to play some dramatic ballgames at BB&T Ballpark.
The Nationals (2-5) carried a two-run lead into the bottom of the 10th inning at the brand new stadium, but dropped the series-clincher 7-6 when Winston Salem (4-3) scored three times in their half of the frame for a walkoff win.
Andrew Garcia drove in the winning run with a single to center field, which a few minutes earlier seemed a long shot for the Dash. The Nationals had scored the go-ahead run on a busted squeeze play when the Dash couldn't tag Brian Peacock in a rundown. They extended their advantage to two when Nick Moresi scored on a Nick Arata groundout.
But the Dash - who lost the first ever ballgame at their new home in extra innings to these Nats - returned the favor in their portion of the tenth. After Clayton Dill struck out Eduardo Escobar to lead off the frame, a four-pitch walk to Josh Phegley started the rally. Seth Loman and Jon Gilmore slashed singles, the second of which scored Phegley and cut the lead in half. After a deep sacrifice fly to center field that tied the game, Garcia stood in with two outs and the winning run 90 feet from home plate. He got just enough of a 1-2 pitch and lined it into center field to lock up the victory for Winston Salem.
After giving up a leadoff home run and falling behind 2-0, Nats starter Brad Peacock settled in and matched Dash righty Nathan Jones, who struck out seven in five innings. Peacock went five and a third, allowing only the two runs while striking out six.
The P-Nats will make the long ride up I-95 tonight ahead of a three-game series in Wilmington. The first game is tomorrow night at 7:05 PM. The broadcast can be heard on potomacnationals.com beginning at 6:50.
