Lynchburg Hillcats News Release
Carlos Mendez extended his hitting streak to seven, but the Hillcats made two errors and weren't able to muster any offense against the Red Sox. Lynchburg falls in the series finale, 7-2.
Salem didn't waste any time capitalizing on the first of Lynchburg's two fielding mistakes. With two outs in the top of the first inning, Anthony Rizzo reached on a fielding error by first baseman Carlos Mendez. Ryan Lavarnway stepped in and nailed his first home run of the season to the deepest part of Calvin Falwell Field.
Both of those runs were unearned.
Errors plagued the Hillcats again in the top of the fifth inning. Alex Hassan reached on a leadoff single and advanced to second after Jon Hee walked. Peter Hissey singled on a bunt to Alex Buchholz at third base, but Buchholz threw the ball away from Mendez, scoring Hassan. Hee later scored on a wild pitch, the first earned run of the game.
Lavarnway belted his second home run of the game in the top of the seventh against reliever Scott Gaffney. That scored Hee and Federowicz. Hee reached on a leadoff double, and Federowicz walked. That made the score 7-0.
The Cats got on the board in the eighth inning in what proved to be a bizarre game in the field. Miguel Rojas led off the inning with a walk and made it to second on Josh Fellhauer's groundout. Buchholz hit an infield single that put runners at the corners with one out. Neftali Soto hit a grounder to short that Hee booted, scoring Rojas. Buchholz later scored on a passed ball credited to Federowicz.
Lynchburg starter Curtis Partch threw five innings and gave up four runs, though only one was earned. He struck out six. Partch gets credit with the loss (1-1).
The Hillcats could barely touch Red Sox starter Fabian Williamson. He threw five innings and gave up only two hits. He struck out three and picks up his second win of the season.
The Hillcats fall to 3-4 on the season, and Salem moves to 5-2.
Lynchburg heads on the road for 13 games starting tomorrow at Frederick. The road trip includes three in Frederick, four in Salem, then the first visit of the year with Potomac (three games) and Kinston (three games). Lynchburg returns back to City Stadium April 30 against Potomac. The Hillcats first road series starts at 7:00. Lynchburg sends out Brad Boxberger (0-0, 1.80 ERA) opposite Keys lefty Nate Nery (0-0, 0.00 ERA). Catch all the action on KD Country 105.5 FM starting at 6:40.
