Nashville SC News Release

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Nashville Soccer Club will open the 2023 season in historic fashion by donning its brand-new "Man in Black" Kit at 3:30 p.m. CT on Saturday against New York City FC. The new kit will mark the first time the club will wear a color other than gold at home in MLS.

The 'Man in Black' kit, which was unveiled on Feb. 17, honors one of the most influential singer-songwriters of all time, Johnny Cash. The all on black ensemble has special nods to Johnny Cash including a jocktag of Johnny Cash's iconic photo at Folsom Prison and his autograph on the back-of-the-neck.

In the spirit of the match, which will serve to honor the life and legacy of Johnny Cash, his son John Carter Cash will perform the Nashville SC Guitar Riff in front of an expected capacity crowd. Additionally, John Carter Cash will be joined on stage by his wife Ana Cristina Cash for a halftime performance and tribute to his dad.

Earlier this morning Nashville SC announced the contract extension of Head Coach Gary Smith and his staff through the 2025 season. Footage from Smith's press conference following the announcement can be found here.

On the pitch, Nashville SC is led by their dynamic MLS Best XI duo Hany Mukhtar and Walker Zimmerman. Mukhtar is coming off a sensational 2022 campaign where he was named the Landon Donovan MLS MVP and won the Golden Boot award. Zimmerman rejoins the club after representing the United States at the 2022 FIFA World Cup™ in Qatar alongside teammate Shaq Moore.

At the conclusion of Thursday's training, Zimmerman spoke about the thrill to open the season in front of the Nashville SC fans in the new kits, while newly acquired Fafà Picault also spoke about the excitement he has for Saturday's match and the opportunity to make his debut for Nashville SC at GEODIS Park.

Nashville SC owns a 1W-0L-1D all-time record against New York City FC following a pair of matches played in 2021, a season in which New York City FC went onto win MLS Cup. Following the match, the club will conduct its post-match media availability in the press conference room at GEODIS Park in person and via Zoom. Footage will be distributed upon conclusion.
