HART OFF TO RED-HOT START WITH CARDINALS

Infielder takes advantage of opportunity with St. Louis

Injuries to Cardinals infielders Fernando Vina and Miguel Cairo opened a window of opportunity for former Redbirds second baseman Bo Hart and the 26-year-old infielder is taking every advantage.

Hart was called up by the St. Louis Cardinals last Thursday morning due to Cairo's being placed on the disabled list after he was hit by a pitch by Milwaukee's Dan Kolb Wednesday night. Cairo will be lost for three to five weeks because of a fractured fifth metacarpal on his left hand. Vina was already sidelined with a torn tendon in his right hamstring.

Hart made his Cardinals debut starting at second base and batting eighth Thursday afternoon in an 8-4 St. Louis win in Milwaukee. He picked up a double in the second inning in his first at-bat off Brewers starter Ruben Quevedo and later scored on an Orlando Palmeiro ground-rule double. Hart then drove home two runs with a fifth-inning triple to center off Quevedo. He finished the day 2-for-3 with a walk, one run scored and two RBI.

He continued the hot start with a 2-for-4 performance Friday vs. Kansas City, including a double and an RBI. Saturday, Cardinals manager Tony La Russa tried him out in the role as lead-off man and Hart started the game off with a triple off the top of the wall in left-center and later scored on Albert Pujols' double.

Hart added another hit Sunday, and after four games for St. Louis, is 8-for-17 (.471) with two doubles, two triples, and an .824 slugging percentage, three RBI and four runs scored.

A 33rd-round draft pick of the Cardinals in 1999 out of Gonzaga, Hart was hitting .298 with 7 home runs and 31 RBI in 66 games in his first year at the Triple-A level with the Redbirds.
