Portland Beavers News Release
PORTLAND, Ore. - Behind an offense that erupted for 18 hits, including nine doubles and three home runs, the Portland Beavers defeated the Memphis Redbirds 10-6 Monday night in front of 3,884 at PGE Park.
The Beavers (40-38) led throughout the game and scored in each of the first four innings. The Redbirds (29-48) mounted a middle-of-the-game rally, but ended up losing their 27th road game of the season.
With his teammates crushing Redbirds' pitching, Portland starter Brian Tollberg (1-1) threw six innings to earn the win. The right-handed hurler allowed five runs, walked two and fanned one for his first win since April 28, 2002.
Portland's offensive onslaught started early. After a two-run first, which included Khalil Greene's fourth home run of the year, the Beavers rallied for a four-run second. In the frame, Portland batted around and slugged six hits, highlighted by four doubles.
Greene's second hit of the day, a third-inning double, gave the Beavers a 7-1 lead. One frame later, after Memphis tallied another run, the Beavers battled back to score two more times, giving the club a 9-2 lead.
The Beavers got their final run in the ninth inning on a two-out solo home run by Alex Fernandez, his third hit of the night.
Greene, who today was selected to play in the All Star Futures Game, went 3-for-4 and finished the night a triple away from hitting for the cycle. Mario Valdez added two doubles and single for Portland.
Josh Pearce (1-2), making just his third start for Memphis, took the loss. The right-hander left the game after 1.1 innings with a tight hamstring, but he allowed Portland's first three runs.
Despite falling behind by seven runs by the fourth inning, the Redbirds offense continued to score. Memphis tallied three runs in the sixth and added another in the eighth, but the Redbirds couldn't match the Beavers.
John Gall had two hits and two RBIs and Jon Nunnally went 2-for-3 to lead the Redbirds.
The Beavers conclude their eight-game homestand Tuesday night against the Redbirds.
NOTES: Monday's game marked just the fourth time the Beavers have scored 10 or more runs at home since the 2001 renovation of PGE Park ...
