Back to Even
The first four games of the North Division Semi-Final Series between the Wheeling Nailers and Toledo Walleye have yet to decide anything, as both teams have collected two wins to this point. On Friday night, Toledo drew even for the second time in the series, as they were victorious, 4-1 at WesBanco Arena. Troy Schwab wasted little time in quieting the nearly 3,000 fans in attendance, as he scored six seconds into a power play at the 2:08 mark of the first period. Shane Berschbach and Justin Mercier lit the lamp 1:16 apart from each other in the second, before Kyle Bonis tacked on another insurance marker later in the middle frame. Sahir Gill's power play goal in the third period for the Nailers prevented a shutout by Jeff Lerg, who made 19 saves in the win. Eric Hartzell assisted on Gill's tally, in addition to turning in a 25-save effort.
First One Without a Comeback
Friday night's game finally stopped one of the strange trends that had occurred during the first three games of the series, as the Walleye never surrendered the lead, after scoring the game's opening goal. Each of the three prior contests had seen at least one lead change, including two swaps in Wheeling's game three triumph. One statistic that remains puzzling is the fact that the Nailers are 0-2 when scoring on the power play in the series, but are 2-0 when they don't. The road team has had the advantage in shots on goal in all four tilts, with the two larger differences taking place in West Virginia.
Gill Gets Going in the Playoffs
Postseason success has been a mixed bag throughout the 23-year history of hockey in Wheeling, as the Nailers and Thunderbirds have combined to reach the playoffs on 13 different occasions. With 2015 being the second straight appearance in the dance, a few historical numbers are beginning to get approached. With his goal on Friday night, Sahir Gill has three goals and five assists in this year's playoffs, raising his career totals to five goals, eight assists, and 13 points in 14 postseason tilts. The 13 points are tied for the seventh most in team history, giving Gill the opportunity to climb as high as third on the all-time list before the series against the Walleye is completed. Last spring, defensemen Peter Merth (who has since retired) rewrote a chapter in the team's history books, by appearing 27 career playoff games.
Schwab, Berschbach Having Their Way
The first two goal scorers in Friday night's game have been familiar culprits during the opening round series, as Troy Schwab and Shane Berschbach both notched their third goals of the playoffs. Schwab's tally was Toledo's fourth power play goal of the series, which came off of a setup by Berschbach just 2:08 into the game. Berschbach's marker came at the 4:19 mark of the second period, as he helped to cue a second straight strong middle frame for the Walleye, who have an 8-2 scoring advantage during that period, including a 7-1 edge at WesBanco Arena. Schwab currently leads all players in the series with eight points, followed by Berschbach's six, then a tie between Wheeling's David Gilbert and Toledo's Cody Lampl at five.
We're Heading to T-Town
Friday night's result guaranteed that the best-of-seven series between Wheeling and Toledo will feature at least six games, as both squads have gone 1-1 in their respective home buildings. This marks the eighth time in team history that the Nailers will play at minimum of six games in a series, as well as the second straight year that that has occurred. Historically, Wheeling has won two games in which the series has been deadlocked at two. In the second round of the 1993 playoffs, the Thunderbirds defeated the Raleigh Icecaps at Wheeling Civic Center, before ending the series in North Carolina the following game. Then, in 1998, the Nailers won a decisive fifth game against the Dayton Bombers, advancing out of the opening round. The Walleye's lone appearance in a fifth game came in 2013, when they defeated the Cincinnati Cyclones to force the series back to Huntington Center.
April 25th will be game five of the series at WesBanco Arena, with McDonald's Friends & Family Packages available. Fans can get four tickets, four hats, and four McDonald's Value Meal Coupons for $39.99.
