Nailers Qualify for 2014 Kelly Cup Playoffs
April 6, 2014 - ECHL (ECHL)
Wheeling Nailers News Release
WHEELING, WV- The Wheeling Nailers, proud ECHL affiliate of the Pittsburgh Penguins and Montreal Canadiens, are excited to announce that they have clinched a spot in the 2014 Kelly Cup Playoffs. This is the 12th playoff berth in the 22-year history of professional hockey in Wheeling, as well as the fourth in the last six seasons.
The Nailers currently own a 38-26-1-5 record through 70 games, which is good for 82 points, and a seventh place position in the ECHL's Eastern Conference Standings. On Saturday night, Wheeling completed its home season, winning at least 20 games for the fourth consecutive campaign and fifth time in the last six. The team will finish its regular season schedule with two games in Cincinnati on Friday and Saturday, with both tilts taking place at 7:35.
Due to South Carolina's victory over Florida, the Nailers are guaranteed to enter the postseason as one of the final four seeds, meaning that they will play games three, four, and five of the Eastern Conference Quarterfinals at WesBanco Arena. Game three will take place on Wednesday, April 23rd at 7:00, game four will take place on Friday, April 25th at 7:00, and game five (if necessary) will take place on Saturday, April 26th at 7:00.
As of Sunday night, the Nailers can play one of six different opponents in round one. Those teams are: Cincinnati, Greenville, Kalamazoo, Orlando, Reading, and South Carolina. Wheeling has a playoff history against five of the six possible opponents, as it has gone 1-0 against Greenville and South Carolina, 1-1 against Reading, 0-1 against Cincinnati, and 0-2 against Kalamazoo. All eight series have occurred since 2004.
