Wheeling Nailers News Release
Wednesday night in Wheeling, the Nailers battled their divisional opponent, the Trenton Titans, in the first of 11 head-to-head meetings. Former Titans Peter Lenes and Luke Pither scored one goal a piece, and Matt Germain notched an assist. Lenes' tally ended up being the game winner, as Wheeling prevailed 3-2.
With less than five minutes to go in the first period, Luke Pither scored his first marker as a Nailer, as he tapped in the rebound of Carl Sneep's initial shot from the blueline. Cody Chupp also picked up an assist, as Wheeling led 1-0, while outshooting their guests 12-5.
The Titans waited until the second period to score the equalizer at 2:39, when Connor Goggin took a centering pass from Ryan Hayes in the slot, before wristing a shot over Scott Darling's stick side shoulder. Goggin's goal was assisted by Hayes and Eric Baler, tying it up at 1-1. The Titans scored again at 16:42, when Andy Bohmbach lifted a rebound into the top of the net, from Stephen Schultz and Matt Konan. 13 seconds later, Carl Sneep scored on a gorgeous one-timer from the blueline, with assists from Adam Ross and Matt Germain. Sneep's slapper came off of Ross' initial shot, sending the contest into third period tied at two.
Peter Lenes scored the lone third period goal at 2:25, with an assist from fellow former Titan, Luke Pither. Pither took the puck along the left wall, sending a pass into the middle, which was tipped home by Lenes. The Titans nearly forced overtime with four seconds left in the game, but Jacob Drewiske's shot rang the left post, as the Nailers earned the 3-2 win.
Scott Darling made 19 saves on 21 shots, earning his second victory in his last three starts. Scott Wedgewood made 28 saves on 31 shots, but took the loss for Trenton.
