Idaho Steelheads News Release
Boise, ID (11/28/12) - Justin Dowling's centering pass with less than five minutes left in regulation bounced off two Colorado Eagles players and into the net for the game-winning goal as the Idaho Steelheads held off the visiting Eagles, 4-3, Wednesday night.
The win was Idaho's 12th of the season (12-5-3). Idaho didn't pick up win no. 12 last season until December 19.
Idaho would score twice in the first period to take control. First, it was a short-handed tally from rookie Austin Fyten. Defenseman Hubert Labrie dug a puck out along the near wall and flipped it out to neutral ice, where Mathieu Tousignant gathered. He carried into the offensive zone where he left the puck for Fyten on a short-handed two-on-one rush. Fyten carried it along the inside of the slot before snapping the puck over the glove hand of Colorado's Adam Brown to give Idaho a 1-0 lead at the 3:20 mark of the first. The lead would grow at 16:48 when Adrian Foster drove the net hard down the right-hand wing. His initial shot was saved but the rebound sat in the crease for Austin Smith and Smith swiped it home for his seventh goal in ten games at the ECHL level.
Colorado answered quickly before the period ended, though, when Riley Nelson's one-timer off a face-off beat Idaho's Josh Robinson to the far post at 17:28 to make it 2-1 after one period of play.
Idaho missed a chance to add to the lead as the Eagles penalty-kill unit was able to kill off a full two-minute, five-on-three power play opportunity as Kael Mouillierat rang a shot off the crossbar midway through the second period. However, Idaho would get one on the board later in the frame when Andrew Carroll re-directed Jace Coyle's shot from the blue line between the circles past Brown at 15:10 of the period to make it 3-1.
Colorado got a Jack Combs goal from the slot at 6:26 of the third to make it 3-2, then Colorado would tie the game when a Cody Sol shot banked off Michael Forney in front of the net, up in the air, and in off of Robinson's back at 12:30 of the third to make it 3-3.
Idaho got the bad-bounce goal right back on the power play at 15:01. Justin Dowling had the puck below the right-hand circle and fired a pass across the crease, looking for Sam Carrick at the back post. Instead, however, the pass would catch the leg pad of Brown, ricochet off of the leg of Sol, and into the net to put Idaho on top for keeps.
Both teams were 1-for-8 in a penalty-filled contest as there were 21 total penalties called in the game. Robinson got the win for Idaho with 36 saves on 39 shots. Brown took the loss with 26 saves on 30 shots.
Friday and Saturday are the popular "Pink in the Rink" promotion as the team will wear special pink jerseys against the Colorado Eagles. The jerseys will be auctioned off to raise money for St. Luke's Mountain States Tumor Institute. Saturday will also double as "Teddy Bear Toss Night," as fans have the opportunity to throw toys on the ice Tickets are available by calling the CenturyLink Arena box office at 208.331.8497 or by going online at www.idahosteelheads.com
