Wheeling Nailers News Release
The Wheeling Nailers, the proud ECHL affiliate of the Stanley Cup Champion Pittsburgh Penguins and AHL's Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins, have announced that Doug Doull will serve as the team's assistant coach for the 2009-2010 season.
The former NHL'er from Glace Bay, NS will be serving as Greg Puhalski's right-hand man as he transitions over to the coaching phase of his career. doull brings a wealth of experience to the Nailers having played 8 seasons at the AAA and NHL levels. This will be doull's first taste of the ECHL.
The 35 year old played primarily left wing from 1998-2006 including 37 games in the NHL with the Boston Bruins and Washigton Capitals.
After four years with Belleville of the Ontario Hockey League in major juniors followed by three seasons at St. Mary's Universtiy, doull made his professional debut in 1998-99 with the Michigan K-Wings when the IHL was a AAA level of hockey. He also played for the Manitoba Moose and Detroit Vipers in that league before heading over to the AHL in 2000 playing for the Saint John Flames, St. John's Maple Leafs and Providence Bruins.
At 6'2", doull was a physical presence as a player and known for his toughness. In 2001-02 and 2002-03 he led the St. John's Maple Leafs in penalty minutes in back to back years including a career high 257 PIM's in his second season there while also scoring a career high 15 goals and 25 points.
In 2003 he received a call-up from the Providence Bruins and made his NHL debut with the Boston Bruins where he proceeded to go toe-to-toe with the some of the league's tougher customers during a 35 game stretch.
In 2004-05 he was acquired by the Phoenix Coyotes organization playing for the Utah Grizzlies of the AHL in 40 games and racking up 232 more PIM's. He concluded his playing career in 2005-06 with the San Antonio Rampage. He was traded mid-season to the Washington Capitals organization where he was assigned to the Hershey Bears of the AHL. He later would receive his second NHL call-up playing 2 games with the NHL's Washington Capitals.

The Wheeling Nailers officially open the 2009-2010 campaign on October 16th at the South Carolina Stingrays. The home opener for the 18th season of professional hockey in the Friendly City is October 23rd when the Nailers host the Cincinnati Cyclones.
