Nailers Extend Point Streak to Four Games
October 23, 2017 - ECHL (ECHL)
Wheeling Nailers News Release
READING, PA- The Wheeling Nailers secured at least one point for the fourth game in a row, but unfortunately, their quest for a fourth straight win came up just short on Sunday afternoon. Nolan Zajac snapped a 1-1 tie at the 1:12 mark of overtime, lifting the Reading Royals to a 2-1 win on home ice at Santander Arena. Reid Gardiner had the lone goal for the Nailers, as Colin Stevens and John Muse were both excellent between the pipes.
Both teams scored in the latter half of a busy first period, which saw 28 combined shots on goal. Reading was the first team to light the lamp, doing so at the 11:20 mark. Alex Krushelnyski sprinkled the puck into the left corner for Matt Willows, who danced along the goal line, and stuffed a shot between Colin Stevens and the post. The Nailers answered with 3:13, utilizing their potent power play. Nick Sorkin connected with Cody Wydo on a right side pass, dragging the Royals defense in that direction. Wydo then fed Reid Gardiner, who drilled in a shot from the slot.
The second period and third periods featured a few momentum swings, but neither team was able to find the back of the net, keeping the game tied, 1-1.
In overtime, Wheeling got its best chance from Kenny Ryan, but couldn't get the puck to go in, and Reading rushed the other way, with Nolan Zajac wiring in a slap shot from the left circle for a 2-1 decision.
John Muse earned the win in goal for the Royals, making 37 saves on 38 shots. Colin Stevens played well in the overtime setback for the Nailers, stopping 29 of the 31 shots he faced.
The Nailers will continue their three-game road trip with two contests in Brampton on Friday and Sunday. The next home game at WesBanco Arena takes place on November 3rd, which is a Frosty Friday against Cincinnati at 7:05. The next big promotional game is Marvel Super Hero Night on November 10th against Toledo at 7:05.
