Quick Hits:
Norfolk returns the Scope to open the home portion of the schedule this weekend with a pair of games against South Carolina. Friday, Oct. 27 is opening night, while Saturday, Oct. 28 is the 11th annual Pink in the Rink game, presented by Sentara Cancer Network. In preparation for Pink in the Rink the Admirals will be hosting a press conference on Tuesday morning at 12:00pm to kick off opening week and unveil the Pink in the Rink Smash Car. In the case of rain, the press conference will be moved inside Scope Arena, and will still take place at 12:00pm.
The Admirals concluded a five-game road trip on Saturday, finishing with a record of 2-3-0-0. Forward Angelo Miceli is tied for second in the ECHL in points (8 pts), while Trevor Mingoia is tied for the league lead in goals (5).
Week in Review:
The Admirals dropped both ends of a weekend double-header with the defending Kelly Cup Champion Colorado Eagles. Friday and Saturday were the only time that the Admirals and Eagles will meet this season, and the first match ups in franchise history. Forward Angelo Miceli led all Admirals skaters by netting three points (2g, 1a) over the two-game span. Netminder Jamie Murray made his Admirals debut on Friday night making 30 saves on 36 shots. Defenseman Joonas Lyytinen, making his North American debut, scored his first ECHL goal on the power play Friday night.
Opening Night/Pink in the Rink:
The Admirals return to the Scope to open the home portion of their schedule next weekend, October 27 and 28 with back to back games against South Carolina. Saturday night is the 11th annual Pink in the Rink game, presented by Sentara Health. Moved to October for the first time, the Admirals will don pick jerseys while skating on pink ice for the Saturday game. Norfolk will also have a pink Smash Car outside the arena from Tuesday- Saturday to help raise funds for breast cancer awareness.
Milestones Approaching:
Forward Angelo Miceli and defenseman Steven Delisle will both hit career milestones in the upcoming week. Delisle will appear in his 300th professional game the next time he takes the ice for the Admirals. The forward, Miceli, has played in 98 career games, and is set to play game 100 on Saturday evening.
Leading the Way:
Forwards Angelo Miceli and Trevor Mingoia both rank among ECHL leaders in points and goals after the first two weeks of the season. Miceli, currently riding a four-game point streak, is tied for second in the ECHL with eight points (3g, 5a). The Montreal, QC native trails only Allen's Casey Pierro-Zabotel (10pts) and is one of four skaters with eight points.
Mingoia had his four-game goal streak snapped on Saturday night after netting five goals over that span. A second-year forward, Mingoia is tied with Allen's Zach Pochiro for the goals lead. Pochiro has played one less game than Mingoia. Dating back to last season, Mingoia had scored in six consecutive games (7g) before being held scoreless on Saturday.
In A Club of His Own:
When Angelo Miceli took and converted on a penalty shot on Saturday night he became the first Admiral skater since the team joined the ECHL in 2015-16 to take a penalty shot. Three times last season Admirals net minders faced penalty shots, but no skater took or converted one.
