Greenville, SC: Connor Knapp made 34 saves to lead the Road Warriors in a 3-1 victory against the Wheeling Nailers.
There was no scoring in the first period as the Nailers fired 13 shots on net and Greenville put 10 on Peter Delmas. The fans inside the Century BMW Rink at the BI-LO Center came alive with Steven Delisle winning a fight handedly against Joe Tolles halfway through the period.
Marc-Olivier Vallerand opened the scoring just 1:25 into the second period. Vallerand scored his 18th of the year on a rebound opportunity with Sean Berkstresser and Danny Hobbs collecting assists. The Road Warriors took a 1-0 lead into the third period and again, Knapp stayed strong in net denying all 11 shots.
The beginning of the third period was controlled by the Road Warriors and eventually led to a goal from Ryan Flanigan. Jordie Johnston took a shot that was deflected by Flanigan for his third of the year for a 2-0 lead. Just 50 seconds later, Reid McNeill's shot from the blue line snuck past Knapp for his first professional goal. The Road Warriors took a 2-1 lead to the closing minutes. The best opportunity came from Chris Barton who had a partial break but hit the post in his attempt to tie the game. During the play, Mike Marcou took a slashing call. The Road Warriors killed the power play, the fifth opportunity of the night for Wheeling. The Nailers pulled the goaltender which worked in the Road Warriors favor. Chad Ziegler received a pass from Vallerand to put his third goal of the year into the empty net. This secured the Road Warriors 3-1 victory who has now tied Gwinnett for first in the South Division. Knapp received the first star and recorded his first ECHL win. Delmas, the game's second star, saved 34 of 36 shots for his sixth loss of the year. Flanigan scored the game winner and received the game's second star.
The Road Warriors play the Florida Everblades tomorrow at 7 p.m. for the final meeting of the year between the two teams. Tomorrow is also Rowdy's birthday bash where local mascots will be on hand in celebration of Rowdy's special day.
