Winston-Salem Dash News Release
MYRTLE BEACH, SC (JUNE 8, 2010) - J.J. Hoover and three Pelicans pitchers combined for a three-hit shutout and Myrtle Beach beat the Dash 2-0 on Tuesday night at BB&T Coastal Field. Dan Nelson and Mike Jones each had RBI base hits in the fifth inning to supply the game's only offense as the Pelicans captured the series victory with back-to-back wins over Winston-Salem.
J.J. Hoover (4-3) and Charlie Leesman (7-2) pitched very well, as the teams were locked in a second straight low-scoring game. Leesman worked out of jams in the second and fourth innings but couldn't hold Myrtle Beach (21-28) scoreless in the fifth.
L.V. Ware got the rally started a night after sending the Pelicans to a win with his walk-off RBI single. Ware reached on a bunt single and scored two batters later when Nelson drilled a ball past Brandon Short in right field. After Travis Jones flied out, Mike Jones singled to center. Nelson scored from second and Myrtle took a 2-0 lead.
The Dash (38-21) put a man on base in every inning except the first and third, but went 1 for 13 with men on base. Winston-Salem's best chance to score came in the eighth, when the team put two on with one out. Seth Loman grounded to first, allowing Jon Gilmore and Eduardo Escobar to move to second and third, respectively. Logan Johnson could not drive either in, as he lined out to left-center field on the first pitch of the at bat to end the inning.
Winston put a man on with one down in the ninth, as Luis Sierra walked against Benino Pruneda. Drew Garcia then started a contentious at bat that ended with Garcia striking out looking and getting ejected by home plate umpire Matt Cumbee. Garcia was unhappy with several strike calls during the at bat and the normally mild-mannered second baseman took distinct umbrage with a called strike on the 3-2 pitch. An argument ensued and Garcia was tossed.
Justin Greene followed with a three-pitch strikeout to end the game. The contest marked the third time the Dash has been shut out all season, two of them have coming against the Pelicans. The team's three hits tied a season-low for hits in a game.
Hoover picked up the win with six scoreless innings, allowing two hits and three walks while striking out five. Pruneda earned his fifth save with a scoreless ninth inning.
Leesman suffered his second loss and his first since his first start of the season on April 10. He allowed two runs on seven hits over six innings.
Santos Rodriguez had another excellent outing for the Dash. The hard-throwing left-hander pitched two nearly perfect innings, striking out four batters and walking one. He has now thrown eight straight scoreless frames.
The Dash hopes to salvage the three-game series on Wednesday night at 7:05 p.m. Reigning Carolina League "Pitcher of the Week" Terry Doyle (2-2, 2.77) looks to build off an impressive start last time out against one of the best pitchers in the league, RHP Randall Delgado (2-5, 2.50). The audio webcast of the game begins at 6:45 on www.wsdash.com
The Dash returns to BB&T Ballpark on Thursday night to start a seven-game home stand with a series against the Wilmington Blue Rocks.
