Hillcats Let Go of Another One in Salem

For the third straight game Lynchburg relinquished three separate leads in a 10-6 loss in 11 innings at Salem. The Hillcats have now dropped six straight, their longest skid of the season.

The Red Sox picked up where they left off the night before by bringing home the first run of the game in the first inning. Will Middlebrooks, who scored the game-winning run in the series opener, hit a two-out RBI single to give Salem the lead. In the third inning Lynchburg fought back with a pair of runs ot take a 2-1 lead. Alex Buchholz drew an RBI walk to tie the contest and Carlos Mendez brought in the go-ahead run with a ground out.

An inning later the Cats tacked on another run with an RBI double by Josh Fellhauer to make it a 3-1 game. Salem closed the gap to a run in the bottom of that frame with an unearned run. Lynchburg committed two errors in the frame. Salem erased the lead with another run in the bottom of the sixth inning with an RBI single by Tim Federowicz to tie the game at three.

The Hillcats wasted little time in taking back their advantage with a run in the top of the seventh inning. Josh Fellhauer collected his fourth hit of the night to reach to start the frame and later was driven in on an RBI double by Kevin Coddington. Neftali Soto added an insurance run for Lynchburg in the eighth inning with his eighth hom run of the season.

In the bottom of the ninth inning Salem would rally again. A home run by Ryan Dent pulled the Sox within a run at 5-4. Then with the Cats one out away from the victory, Ryan Lavarnway hit a game-tying RBI double to knot up the game at five a piece. It stayed tied until the top of the eleventh inning when Kevyn Feiner hit his first home run of the season and the seventh of his career to put Lynchburg back into the lead at 6-5.

The advantage was short lived though as Salem would rally for a third time with a five-run bottom of the eleventh inning to earn the 10-6 walk-off win. A throwing error plated the tying run in the frame, which was the Cats fifth error of the night. Then Federovicz belted a walk-off grand slam to give the Sox their second straight walk-off win. The loss went to Andrew Bowman (1-3) for Lynchburg (24-35), who has now lost a season-worst six games in a row. The win went to Lance McClain (1-2) for Salem (35-24), who pulled back within three games of first place Winston-Salem in the Southern Division.

The final game of the series and the seven-game road swing is slated for 7:05 p.m. on Wednesday night at Salem Memorial Ballpark. Right-hander Brad Boxberger (3-5, 3.57) will get the nod for the Hillcats opposite right-hander Caleb Clay 2-3, 4.18) for the Red Sox.
