Keys Let One Slip Away

Frederick Keys News Release

It appeared the Keys were onto victory once more as Frederick walloped Potomac pitching in a five-run fifth inning to take a 6-2 lead. It would evaporate though as the Keys committed three errors in the sixth inning en route to a five-run rally as Frederick let one slip away, 7-6.

Trailing 2-1 in the fifth inning the Keys bats went to work. C Phillip Britton singled up the middle and scored on a double by CF Xavier Avery to the centerfield wall. Avery would come home two batters later when 1B Joe Mahoney doubled him home. Both Avery and Mahoney had three hits on the night.

The Keys weren't done. RF Ronnie Welty singled and after the Nationals lifted their starting pitcher, LF Jacob Julius hit a three-run home run to right field. The blast gave the Keys a 6-2 lead.

But Frederick opened the door to the Nationals in the sixth inning. Frederick made consecutive errors to open the inning and Potomac wouldn't let the opportunity go to waste. Potomac rallied with four hits following the errors to tie the game at 6-6. With runners at the corners and two down 2B Miguel Abreu had trouble handling a groundball that led to another Nationals run.

Frederick tied the game in the seventh inning but Potomac scored the game winning when SS Will Ortiz singled home CF Nick Moresi with one out.

Wilmington defeated Kinston 2-1 so the Keys magic number to clinch the division remains at five with 11 to play.

The series finale is Wednesday June 9th at 7:03 p.m. as Ryan O'Shea will be on the hill. The Keys will battle another big league rehabber as Ross Detwiler takes the hill for Potomac. Coverage begins at 6:40 on The Keys Baseball Network.

Frederick returns home for the first of four games with the Salem Red Sox Thursday, June 10th at 7:00 p.m. For tickets contact the Keys Box Office at 1-877-8-GO-KEYS or purchase online at frederickkeys.com.
