Potomac Nationals News Release
(WOODBRIDGE, VA) The Potomac Nationals snapped a three-game losing streak with an 8-7 come-from-behind victory that was capped by Will Ortiz's RBI single in the bottom of the eighth. Dan Leatherman struck out consecutive Keys to strand the tying run at third in the ninth for his third win.
The Nats scored right out of the gates. Chris Curran tripled to open the game, and scored on Steve Lombardozzi's groundout. The Keys tied it in the third when Joe Mahoney singled in Xavier Avery. The Nats regained the lead in the fourth when Tyler Moore doubled in Lombardozzi.
Jesse Estrada was very solid in a sport start for four innings, but the Keys caught up to the big righthander in the fifth. A single from Phillip Britton - his first hit with the Keys - led off the frame before another RBI double by Avery. Greg Miclat then moved Avery to third with a sacrifice bunt; Avery scored on Mahoney's double to center field. Ronnie Welty then singled to end Estrada's night. But Cory Van Allen gave up a booming home run to Jacob Julius, and it was 6-2.
The sixth inning was a debacle for the Keys. Consecutive errors to open the inning ignited a five-run frame for Potomac. Moore was back at it, doubling in Derek Norris, the beneficiary of shaky Frederick defense. Peacock then singled home Mike Burgess; Nick Moresi followed with a sacrifice fly to center field. Dan Lyons singled and scored on a Chris Curran single, and the Nats had regained the lead, 7-6.
Frederick tied it again in the seventh. A leadoff walk to Greg Miclat came back to haunt the Nats when Jacob Julius singled to right. Leatherman then got a huge inning-ending double play to keep it tied.
Moresi opened the eighth with a double to left, was moved over to third on a Lyons sacrifice, and scored on Ortiz's hot shot to left. Leatherman sealed the deal in the ningh with a pair of strikeouts, and the losing streak was history.
The Nats will send Major Leaguer Ross Detwiler to the hill Wednesday night in the series finale at 7:03 PM. Tickets are available for a Belly Buster Wednesday, so call 703-590-2311 to get yours now.
