Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release
ZEBULON, N.C. - Keston Hiura's walk-off single in the ninth ended the Myrtle Beach Pelicans' three-game winning streak Wednesday with a 2-1 loss to the Carolina Mudcats at Five County Stadium.
The game was tied at one in the ninth when Myrtle Beach (6-13) reliever Tyler Peyton walked Weston Wilson to begin the frame. Luis Aviles Jr. notched an infield single before Carlos Belonis fouled out. A wild pitch moved Wilson to third and then Aviles Jr. stole second. The Pelicans decided to intentionally walk Ryan Aguilar to load the bases, but Hiura lined a base hit to right to win it for Carolina (10-9).
Myrtle Beach came back to tie the game in the eighth. Down 1-0, D.J. Wilson singled, stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Two batters later, Jhonny Pereda, who reached base three times, lined an RBI single to center to knot the tally at one.
Birds starter Keegan Thompson dueled with Mudcats starter Nathan Kirby and reliever Victor Diaz to keep the game scoreless into the sixth. Thompson ceded just two hits in his five shutout frames, striking out three batters.
With the right-hander out of the game though, Carolina tacked on the contest's first run in the sixth. Dallas Carroll walked with two outs before scoring on an RBI single by Ronnie Gideon.
