Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release
LHP Chris Hernandez (8-5, 2.94) at RHP Barret Loux (8-4, 3.29)
FLAIR FOR THE DRAMATIC: After starting 0-for-4, Zach Zaneski picked the perfect time to extend his hitting streak to 15 games. His tenth-inning single plated Travis Adair with the winning run to give the Birds their third straight victory. The former Rhode Island Ram's streak is the third longest in the Carolina League in 2011, one shy of tying teammate Ryan Strausborger and Frederick's Miguel Abreu, who ran up 16-gamers earlier this year. Zaneski's run began when he went 2-for-10 while catching all 23 innings in a June 12 marathon in Kinston. "Z" is batting .304 (21-69) during this stretch and has raised his average to .301 and is only 40 plate appearances shy of qualifying.
TURNING THE TABLES: The Salem Red Sox had immense success against the Pelicans for the last two seasons. In 2009, their first as a Red Sox affiliate, they went 13-7 against Myrtle Beach and ran up a 15-5 mark in the head-to-head series in 2010. When the Red Sox took the first three games of the season series in Salem May 5-7, all by one run, it seemed like it would be more of the same. But Salem's 31-12 run was snapped on May 8 on a Robbie Ross gem, and starting with that game the Pelicans have won eight of ten against the Red Sox. The Birds are now looking for their first four-game sweep of Salem since April 24-27, 2006, when they were still a Houston Astros' affiliate called the Avalanche.
MOVIN' ON UP: Johan Yan dazzled in his first 26 appearances for the Pelicans and after striking out the only two batters he faced to record his tenth save on Thursday, the side-winding righty was rewarded for his stellar pitching with a promotion to Double-A Frisco. A converted third baseman in only his second full season as a pitcher, Yan went 5-3 for Myrtle Beach with a 1.52 ERA. Taking out his one rough outing, when he blew a save in Winston-Salem on May 18 (1 IP, 4 ER), he pitched to a 0.67 ERA over his other 40.1 innings of work. After his last appearance, he was tied for third in the Carolina League with former Rangers farmhand Hector Nelo of Potomac in saves. His rate of 10.45 strikeouts per nine innings ranked third in the circuit among all CL relievers.
BOLD STROKES: Jared Bolden continued to scorch the ball last night with three hits, including the game-tying single in the seventh inning. Bolden has multiple hits in his last four games, going 10-for-17 (.588). He has registered two or more hits in seven of his last nine games. Over his past 11 games, he's 18-for-39 (.462) with two homers, five doubles, nine RBIs and eight runs.
THEY'VE COME A LONG WAY: Both Jared Bolden and Jared Prince were mired in brutal slumps to begin the 2011 season, and both have recovered remarkably. Bolden started 2-for-32 (.063), but has hit .317 since to raise his average to a .283 clip that is now the sixth-best in the Carolina League. Prince was in a 2-for-34 hole (.059) before raising his average to .278, ranking 12th in the loop. Prince also ranks second in the circuit in on base percentage at .379.
