Winston-Salem Dash News Release
LYNCHBURG, VA (JULY 16, 2011) - Lynchburg scored five runs in the sixth inning to overcome a two-run deficit and took a 6-2 win on Saturday night at City Stadium to avoid the four-game sweep. Tyler Saladino belted his 12th home run of the season to account for the scoring for Winston-Salem.
After both starters allowed only one hit each through the first four innings, Winston (11-11, 43-49) got on the board with two outs in the fifth. Daniel Wagner reached with a bunt single, and Saladino homered to put the Dash up by a pair.
Later in that same inning, Jared Mitchell was walked, prompting an argument by Hillcats catcher Christian Bethancourt. The catcher was ejected, forcing designated hitter Shawn McGill to move to catcher and pitcher Blaine Sims to bat. Sims made his first professional at-bat in the bottom of the fifth and grounded out.
Dash starter Jake Petricka threw a scoreless bottom of the fifth, but struggled in the sixth inning. Barrett Kleinknecht led off the frame with a bunt single, and came around to score on L.V. Ware's double. Marcus Lemon walked before Andrelton Simmons bunted the runners to second and third. Phil Gosselin then singled home the tying and go-ahead run to put the Hillcats in front by one. Shawn McGill reached after he was hit by a pitch, and then Joey Terdoslavich grounded into a fielder's choice to put runners at the corners with two outs. Pinch-hitter Geraldo Rodriguez then doubled home the remaining two base-runners to put Lynchburg up 5-2.
The Dash put the lead-off batter on base in five straight innings from the second to the sixth, but could not plate a run. In the fifth, Kyle Colligan walked to lead off the frame but was picked off on a stolen base attempt.
Lynchburg (7-15, 37-55) scored again in the eighth when Gosselin walked to start the inning against reliever Brad Furnish. With one out, Terdoslavich doubled down the left field line to give the Hillcats another insurance run.
After a lead-off double by Ian Gac in the sixth inning, 12 of the final 13 Dash hitters were retired by Hillcats pitching. Sims (3-4) picked up the win after he gave up two runs (all earned) in six innings. Petricka (0-4) was hit with the loss. He allowed five runs (all earned) on five hits in 5.2 innings and struck out five. All five of the runs, and four of the five hits came in the five-run sixth.
Winston-Salem continues the season's longest road trip by heading to Kinston for a four-game series starting on Sunday at 4:30 at Grainger Stadium. LHP Joe Serafin (1-7, 5.79) starts for the Dash opposite RHP Marty Popham (3-0, 2.83). Winston-Salem returns to BB&T Ballpark on Friday when the team opens up a seven-game home stand against Potomac and Kinston.
