Frederick Keys News Release

Wilmington, DE - Tyler Sample surrendered five runs in just five innings and the Wilmington offense continued to falter with runners in scoring position as the Blue Rocks fell to the Frederick Keys on Saturday night, 5-2. The loss was Wilmington's third in its four-game series at home with the first half Carolina League Northern Division champions.

Sample appeared to bring his "A" game in the opening inning when he fanned three and yielded just a one-out walk. But the Keys nickled and dimed him to death with single tallies in the second, third and fourth innings and then two runs in the fifth.

Mike Flacco got things started for Frederick. His one-out triple in the second set up an RBI bloop-single to right off the bat of Brian Ward that made it, 1-0 Keys. Frederick went in front 2-0 an inning later thanks to Jacob Julius sacrifice fly to left. Sample allowed another run in the fourth when Flacco scored on a Ward double play grounder.

The Keys opened things up in the fifth. Steve Bumbry and Jonathan Schoop started the frame with consecutive singles. Sample looked like he might he escape the jam when he answered with back-to-back outs, but a walk of Dale Mollenhauer was followed by a two-run single to left from Flacco that made it 5-0 Frederick.

Wilmington responded by plating a pair in the sixth. After starting the night 0-for-6 with runners in scoring position, the Rocks finally broke through when John Whittleman followed Nick Van Stratten's double with an RBI single to right. Three batters later Joey Lewis scored Whittleman with a seeing-eye single to left.

That was it for the Blue Crew however. Frederick starter Ryohei Tanaka struck out five while allowing only two runs in six solid innings. He gave way to reliever Chris Petrini who stranded a runner in scoring position in the seventh and worked around a two-out hit batsman in the eighth. Clay Schrader came on in the ninth, and despite walking a pair to bring the potential tying run to the plate, nailed down his third save of the season.

Wilmington hopes to clear its head with a night off on Sunday before embarking on a two-city seven-game road trip that begins in Myrtle Beach on Monday. Justin Marks (5-6, 4.28) hits the hill for Wilmington in the opener with the Pelicans. He will be countered by Myrtle Beach left-hander Robbie Ross (8-3, 2.40). First pitch is slated for 7:05 p.m.
