BIRDS SWEPT BY DASH IN 6-1 LOSS

The Myrtle Beach Pelicans were swept by the Winston-

Salem Dash with Monday's 6-1 loss from TicketReturn.Com Field at Pelicans Ballpark. Winston-Salem struck first with Mitch Roman's two-out, two-run single in the third inning. The Birds answered with Tyler Alamo's RBI single in the bottom of the third to halve the deficit at 2-1. In the sixth inning, the Dash increased their lead to three on a Zach Remillard RBI single and Luis Gonzalez sacrifice fly. Later in the frame, a passed ball brought home Daniel Gonzalez before a Blake Rutherford RBI base hit made the margin 6-1. John Parke worked seven innings of one-run ball to earn the win. Andruw Monasterio reached base three times in the loss.

THOSE DASTARDLY DASH

Thanks to a rain-shortened two-game sweep by Potomac and a three-game brooming by Winston-Salem, Myrtle Beach has lost five contests in a row, one shy of matching a season-high. The Pelicans have now been swept in consecutive sets for the first time since Wilmington and Lynchburg broomed the Birds back-to-back from May 25-30, 2013. Meanwhile, the Dash's sweep was the Camel City club's third of Myrtle Beach this year, making Winston-Salem the first team in recorded Pelicans history (through the 2005 season) to execute three broomings of the Birds in a single campaign. The Dash outscored the Pelicans 19-3 over the three games, including 14-0 in the fifth and sixth innings. Consequently, Myrtle Beach's divisional deficit of 8.5 games, their largest of the entire season.

STARTING FROM THE BOTTOM

Myrtle Beach ranks in the bottom half of the Carolina League in every single offensive category. The Pelicans have mustered just 361 runs this season, 45 fewer than that of ninth-place Carolina, which is closer to third-place Wilmington (449) as they are to Myrtle Beach. The Birds' .645 OPS is also by far the worst in the league, .031 away from the ninth-place Mudcats, who are closer to fourth-place Salem (.703) as they are to the Pelicans. Myrtle Beach also ranks last in slugging percentage (.330), doubles (131), hits (752) and home runs (42), with those marks significantly below the league's ninth-place club in each respective category.

THE 'PEN IS MIGHTIER THAN THE SWORD

Myrtle Beach's bullpen has caught fire over the last 12 games. During that span, Pelicans relievers have worked 45.2 innings, an average of nearly four per game, and surrendered just 10 runs, seven earned, on 34 hits (6.7 H/9) for a 1.38 ERA. The Birds' bullpen has combined for 39 strikeouts (7.7 K/9) against 13 walks (2.6 BB/9) during this span.

YOUNG FOREVER

In the first four games following his July 7 promotion from Low-A South Bend to Myrtle Beach, Jared Young went just 2-for-15 (.133) with an RBI and three walks. However, the Prince George, British Columbia native seems to be starting to figure out the High-A level. Young is currently working on a 10-game hitting streak, batting 13-for-38 (.342/.359/.500) with a pair of home runs, four RBIs and a free pass over this run.

RACE CARO

In 98 games between Myrtle Beach, Double-A Tennessee and Low-A South Bend in 2017, Roberto Caro hit just .239/.351/.343 (.694 OPS) with 17 extra-base hits and 20 stolen bases. In just 52 contests this season with the Pelicans and Low-A Cubs, Caro is slashing a combined .376/.457/.525 (.982 OPS), logging 26 steals and already surpassing last year's extra-base hits total with 19. The San Cristobal, D.R., native has multiple knocks in eight of his 16 games so far with the Birds. Caro has registered at least one hit in 11 of the last 12 contests, going 19-for-42 (.452/.500/.548) with three doubles, five RBIs and nine stolen bases.

BROKEN BATS

Myrtle Beach has mustered a total of nine runs over their last six games. This rough offensive stretch comes right on the heels of a five-game winning streak that saw the Pelicans hit .293/.379/.420 (174 AB, 51 H, 7 2B, 0 3B, 5 HR, 20 BB, 4 HBP) as a team. Over these last six contests, the Birds are slashing just .237/.320/.283 (198 AB, 47 H, 4 2B, 1 3B, 1 HR, 19 BB, 5 HBP). The batting average and on-base percentage the Pelicans have posted over the last six games fall almost perfectly in line with their season marks of .238 and .315, respectively.
