Winston-Salem Dash News Release
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Despite putting the tying run on third base in the bottom of the ninth inning, Winston-Salem fell to Frederick 4-3 on Tuesday night at BB&T Ballpark.
After stranding the potential tying run at second base in the eighth inning, the Dash had a chance in the final frame when Luis Gonzalez lashed a triple down the right-field line against Keys (11-22, 46-56) closer Tyler Erwin with two outs. However, Laz Rivera grounded out to shortstop to end the game, bringing Winston-Salem's (21-11, 62-40) four-game winning streak to a close.
Frederick got on the board first, scoring a run on two hits in the top of the second inning against Luis Martinez (6-5). With two outs, Martinez issued a walk to Jake Ring and then allowed a single to Jomar Reyes to put runners on second and third. Daniel Fajardo drove in Reyes with a single into right field to give the Keys a 1-0 lead.
Winston-Salem tied the game in the next half inning. After Cristian Alvarado (10-7) struck out back-to-back batters to start the inning, Yermin Mercedes socked Alvarado's 1-1 pitch over the left-center field fence for a solo home run, good for his eighth homer of the year. Mercedes, who finished the game 1-for-3, extended his hitting streak to a season-best nine games.
But, the Keys pulled back ahead in top of the fourth. Martinez allowed back-to-back singles to Randolph Gassaway and Preston Palmeiro to start the inning, and then got Ring to pop out to shortstop. But, Reyes hit a line drive into left field to plate Gassaway to give Frederick a 2-1 lead.
The Dash pulled even again in the bottom of the fifth. First, Ti'Quan Forbes singled up the middle and moved to second base on a sacrifice bunt from Yeyson Yrizarri. Then, Zach Remillard hit a line drive that ricocheted off of Alvarado's leg and into right-center field, bringing in Forbes on an RBI single to tie the game at two.
An inning later, Winston-Salem took the lead. With one out in the sixth, Mitch Roman bounced a single up the middle. Then, Gavin Sheets hit a line drive off the top of the left-field fence that resulted in an RBI double, driving in Roman to put the Dash ahead 3-2.
However, the Keys struck back in the top of the seventh. Two batters after Alejandro Juvier led off with a single, Cole Billingsley hit a high fly ball into right field. Rutherford had trouble tracking the ball against the lights, and it fell in for a game-tying, RBI triple. Billingsley later scored on a sacrifice fly from Wilson Garcia to give Frederick a 4-3 lead.
Winston-Salem continues its series with Frederick on Wednesday when left-hander Kyle Kubat (4-1, 1.93 ERA) starts for the Dash against Keys left-hander Alex Wells. Pregame coverage begins at 10:45 a.m., and fans can catch all the action on wsdash.com/broadcast, MiLB.tv, and the TuneIn Radio App.
Wednesday's game is a camp day, with first pitch coming at 11 a.m. The homestand concludes with a Lowes Foods Thirsty Thursday, featuring select beers for $1 through the seventh inning. For tickets and more information, call the Dash at (336) 714-2287 or visit wsdash.com.
