Frederick Keys News Release
WINSTON-SALEM, NC - The Frederick Keys scored twice in the top of the seventh to defeat the Winston-Salem Dash 4-3 on Tuesday night at BB&T Ballpark. Cristian Alvarado delivered his fourth straight quality start and earned his 10th win, pulling him into a tie for the most in the Carolina League.
Trailing 3-2 after six innings, the Keys (46-56, 11-22) scored twice against Luis Martinez. Alejandro Juvier opened the inning with a single, moved to second on a wild pitch and then to third on a groundout. That sent up Cole Billingsley who hit a flyball to rightfield. Charging in, Blake Rutherford lost the ball in the lights, allowing Juvier to score the tying run and Billingsley to reach third. One batter later, Wilson Garcia put the visitors ahead for good with a sacrifice fly.
The Dash (62-40, 21-11) failed to convert in the seventh and eighth innings, but put the tying run on base in the ninth against Tyler Erwin. After the Keys southpaw retired the first two batters, Luis Gonzalez tripled down the rightfield line to send up Laz Rivera. Erwin fell behind 3-1, but ultimately induced a groundout to end the game.
Frederick and Winston-Salem traded runs in the second. Jake Ring walked with two outs, while Martinez (6-5) allowed a single to Jomar Reyes to put two on base. One batter later, Daniel Fajardo connected on an RBI single. A half frame later, former Key, Yermin Mercedes, hit a solo homer off Alvarado (10-7) to make it 1-1.
Three singles put the Keys ahead 2-1 after 3.5 frames, but the Dash plated the next two. Zach Remillard singled home Ti'Quan Forbes from second, while Gavin Sheets gave the Dash their first and only lead in the sixth with an RBI double to left.
Alvarado picked up his third win in four starts, allowing three runs on seven hits in six innings. He struck out six and did not walk a batter. Martinez was tagged with the loss, giving up four runs on 10 hits in 6.1 innings. Erwin worked the final two innings to tally his 11th save. He surrendered two hits, walked one and struck out two.
The Keys and Dash play the middle game of their series on Wednesday morning at BB&T Ballpark. Left-hander Alex Wells (4-6, 3.97) starts for Frederick against Dash left-hander Kyle Kubat (4-1, 1.93). First pitch is scheduled for 11:00 a.m and the broadcast can be heard on frederickkeys.com and the TuneIn radio app.
