MYRTLE BEACH SHUT OUT BY WINSTON-SALEM

A five-run fifth Saturday spurred the Winston-Salem Dash to a 6-0 shutout of the Myrtle Beach Pelicans from TicketReturn.Com Field at Pelicans Ballpark. The game was scoreless through four innings before the Dash jumped on Birds starter Cory Abbott in the fifth inning. Blake Rutherford opened up the scoring with an RBI single before Mitch Roman notched a two-run double. A Gavin Sheets RBI ground out made it 4-0 and then Yermin Mercedes' RBI base hit put the advantage at 5-0. In the seventh, Rutherford scored on a wild pitch to make it 6-0. Dash starter Blake Battenfield pitched six shutout innings to earn the win.

THE ROBBER

Myrtle Beach was shut out for the 15th time this season with Saturday's 6-0 defeat to Winston-Salem. Those 15 blankings are by far the most in the Carolina League, with only Lynchburg's 10 shutouts even remotely close to the Pelicans. The Birds' record for losses in a shutout game are the 17 zeroes the club suffered in 2003.

NO PORT ACCESS

Myrtle Beach's offensive problems go far deeper than just shutouts. The club ranks in the bottom half of the Carolina League in every single offensive category. The Pelicans have mustered just 358 runs this season, 37 fewer than that of ninth-place Carolina, which is actually closer to fourth-place Frederick (441) than they are to Myrtle Beach. The Birds' .645 OPS is also by far the worst in the league, .031 away from the ninth-place Mudcats, who are as close to fourth-place Salem (.707) as they are to the Pelicans. Myrtle Beach also ranks last in slugging percentage (.331), doubles (131), hits (735) and home runs (42), with those marks significantly below the league's ninth-place club in each respective category.

AS DEPENDABLE AS ORE

Myrtle Beach's bullpen has caught fire over the last 10 games. During that span, Pelicans relievers have worked 39.0 innings, an average of nearly four per game, and surrendered just seven runs, five earned, on 29 hits (6.7 H/9) for a 1.15 ERA. The Birds' bullpen has combined for 33 strikeouts (7.6 K/9) against 10 walks (2.3 BB/9) during this span.

SHEPHERDING SUCCESS

In 98 games between Myrtle Beach, Double-A Tennessee and Low-A South Bend in 2017, Roberto Caro hit just .239/.351/.343 (.694 OPS) with 17 extra-base hits and 20 stolen bases. In just 52 contests this season with the Pelicans and Low-A Cubs, Caro is slashing a combined .373/.456/.525 (.982 OPS), logging 26 steals and already surpassing last year's extra-base hits total with 19. The San Cristobal, D.R., native has multiple knocks in seven of his 15 games so far with the Birds. Caro has registered at least one hit in 10 of the last 11 contests, going 17-for-38 (.447/.500/.553) with three doubles, five RBIs and nine stolen bases.

SETTLING IN

In the first four games following his July 7 promotion from Low-A South Bend to Myrtle Beach, Jared Young went just 2-for-15 (.133) with an RBI and three walks. However, the Prince George, British Columbia native seems to be starting to figure out the High-A level. Young is currently working on an eight-game hitting streak, batting 10-for-31 (.323/.344/.516) with a pair of home runs, four RBIs and a free pass over this run.

WIN BY THE SHEEP, DIE BY THE SHEEP

Since the start of the 2015 campaign, including the postseason, Myrtle Beach and Winston-Salem have met in 79 contests, with the Birds owning a 44-35 (.557) record against their Camel City foes. Incredibly, 53 of those 79 games (67.1 percent) have been decided by three runs or less. The Pelicans have a significant edge in those games, going 33-20 (.623) against Winston-Salem in those contests decided by slim margins.

PELICAN POINTS

Jhonny Pereda is 17-for-51 over his last 12 games, providing offense at a .333/.382/.471 line during this span. He was an even 0-for-16 in the four games prior to this run. Pereda has settled his batting line on the season to .282/.354/.390... Coming into play Sunday, the Birds are 25-2 in their last 27 attempts when scoring at least four runs. Myrtle Beach has tallied a 35-9 (.795) record when plating four-plus runs... After a poor start at Winston on June 11, Bryan Hudson has netted a 3.28 ERA over his last five outings.
