Salem Red Sox News Release

SALEM, VA - The Salem Red Sox never got their offense clicking Sunday afternoon, and didn't reach base after the sixth inning as they were dealt a 5-0 loss by the Potomac Nationals at Haley Toyota Field.

Salem (15-15, 46-50) lost their third straight game, going 0-3 with runners in scoring position and only passing second base once. Potomac (13-16, 50-46) scored in the first inning and never trailed, earning their fifth straight win on six five-hit innings from starting pitcher Ben Braymer (W, 5-3) and three perfect frames from relievers Carlos Acevedo and Steven Fuentes.

Potomac leapt ahead in the top of the first against Salem starter Jake Thompson (L, 4-9). Jack Sundberg sliced a grounder just inside the third-base line into the outfield for a one-out double, and came home when Ian Sagdal smashed a triple to right. Thompson uncorked a wild pitch, allowing Sagdal to score and run the lead to 2-0.

The P-Nats doubled their advantage in the fourth inning. Nick Banks led off with a single, and Telmito Agustin lined a single to right that Victor Acosta misplayed, allowing the runners to reach second and third. Jakson Reetz flew out to right, and David Masters grounded out sharply to third, but Bryan Mejia cracked a single through the middle to score the runners and make it a 4-0 game. Potomac tacked on one more in the top of the sixth against new reliever Yankory Pimentel, who gave up a leadoff single to Banks before Agustin smashed a double to plate Banks and extend the lead to 5-0.

Thompson allowed four runs (three earned) on five hits and three walks in five innings, whiffing four. Pimentel surrendered a run on two hits and a walk in three frames, fanning two batters. Jake Cosart balanced one hit with one strikeout in a shutout inning of relief.

The Sox will try to avoid a sweep in their Monday morning series finale, with righty Tanner Houck toeing the slab for Salem against Potomac righty Kyle Johnston. First pitch at Haley Toyota Field is scheduled for 11:05 a.m., and the pregame show with Ben Gellman and Suzie Cool begins at 10:45 a.m. on the Red Sox broadcast network.
