TONIGHT: The Mudcats continue a three game road trip tonight with game two of a three game series versus the Lynchburg Hillcats at City Stadium. Tonight's game is the 9th of 13 total meetings between the two teams this season. Carolina last night's series opener 6-5 and trail the current series 1-0. The Mudcats also recently dropped three of four to the Hillcats late last week between 7/13 and 7/16 and trail the overall season series 5-3.
ICYMI: The Mudcats had a 5-2 lead in the eighth, but the Hillcats rallied for four runs over the final two innings while defeating the Mudcats 6-5 in game one of a three game series in Lynchburg on Saturday night.
ABOUT LAST NIGHT: The Mudcats led 4-2 after the sixth in last night's loss and ended up suffering their Carolina League leading 13th loss when leading after six innings in a game this season after falling to the Hillcats 6-5 last night. The Mudcats are 40-13 when leading after six innings and are the only team in the CL with more than seven losses when leading after the sixth in a game this year.
STARTING OFF: RHP Devin Williams enters tonight's start at 0-2 with a 4.19 ERA over eight games so far this season. He has also totaled 23 strikeouts, eight walks and a .253 average against. Williams last pitched on 7/16 against these same Hillcats and worked through 2.2 innings with one hit, one run, one walk and three strikeouts. He also reached 47 pitches (32 strikes) and fell an out shy of his three inning limit for the second straight game. Williams has worked through 3.0 full innings once (7/1) this season.
WHERE THEY RANK: RHP Conor Harber is currently 1st in the Carolina League in earned run average (2.23) and in batting average against (.209)... LHP Cam Roegner is currently 2nd in the Carolina League in earned run average (2.26), 3rd in innings pitched (103.1), tied for 3rd in wins (8), 4th in WHIP (1.16) and 4th among starters in fewest baserunners/9ip (10.71)... RHP Braden Webb is currently tied for 3rd in the CL in most walks (49), 4th among CL starters in lowest batting average against (.240) and tied for 3rd among starters in highest SO/9ip ratio (9.10)... RHP Luke Barker leads the Carolina League in saves (14), games (34) and games finished (26). Barker is also tied for 2nd among CL relievers in lowest batting average (.190), 4th in highest strikeouts/9ip (9.26) and 5th in lowest BB/9ip ratio (2.12).
STELLAR D: Weston Wilson has been charged with only three errors this season and owns an overall .993 fielding percentage while playing 34 games at 1B, 13 games at 2B, 14 games at 3B, 1 game at SS, 25 games in LF and 9 games in RF this season... The Mudcats are currently 2nd in the CL in both team fielding (.978) and team caught stealing efficiency (.397).
TRENDING: Weston Wilson has hit safely in 17 of his last 20 games and is batting .405/.439/.649 with a 1.088 OPS since June 30 (30 H, 14 R, 4 2B, 1 3B, 4 HR, 21 RBI)... Cooper Hummel is batting .319/.455/.568 with a 1.023 OPS (14 H, 9 R, 5 2B, 2 HR, 7 RBI) since replacing an injured Tucker Neuhaus in the fourth inning of a home game versus the Keys on July 6. Hummel ended up going 1-for-2 with a two-run home run (eventual game winner in the seventh) in that same game and has not missed a start since.
TOPS IN JULY: Weston Wilson (1.120 OPS) and Cooper Hummel (1.024 OPS) are currently 2nd and 4th in the Carolina League in OPS in July. Wilson also leads the CL in batting average (.414) and hits (29) this month.
OF LATE: The Mudcats are currently 5-8 over their last 13 games and since seeing their season high five winning streak (7/2-7/6) end on July 7.
MUDDIES ON THE POND: The Carolina offense is currently last in the CL when batting with runners on base (.235 / .671 OPS), last when batting with runners in scoring position (.231 / .680 OPS), 8th when batting with runners in scoring position with 2-outs in an inning. (.222 / .678 OPS) and 8th when batting with the bases loaded (.197 / .570 OPS).
HITS AND Ks: The Carolina offense has totaled 169 more strikeouts than hits (925 SO, 756 H) so far this season. Carolina's difference in strikeouts over hits is currently the 5th largest in MiLB. Since 1991, only the 2017 and 2007 Mudcats have finished a season with more strikeouts than hits.
