Mustangs Stifled by Milwaukee
January 10, 2015 - Major Arena Soccer League (MASL)
Chicago Mustangs News Release
Hoffman Estates, IL- The Chicago Mustangs, proud members of the Major Arena Soccer League (www.MASLSoccer.com), made a valiant push at the end but lost to the Milwaukee Wave 8-5 at the UW-Milwaukee Panther Arena.
The Wave came out on fire and took the early lead in the border battle just 55 seconds into the first period when defenseman Victor Quiroz scored his first goal of the season on an assist from Bato Randoncic. Just one minute later, defenseman Tony Walls scored his 8th goal of the year for Milwaukee on an assist from offensive leader Luan Sales Oliveira. Unable to find an answer, the Mustangs fell into a 3-0 hole just 7 minutes into the game when JC Banks booted his 12th goal of the season past goalie Jesus Flores. Milwaukee, during their "We Hate Chicago" theme night, kept the pedal to the metal in the first as midfielder Ian Bennett scored his team leading 17th goal of the season to advance the lead to 4 goals. Chicago was finally able to get on the board with just 12 seconds remaining in the first period when Efrain "Wilo" Martinez cut the defecit to 3 goals with his 9th on the season.
The second quarter started off much differently than the first as the Mustangs were able to narrow the deficit even more when forward Matthew Stewart scored just 3 minutes into the quarter. Bennett quickly answered back for the Wave when exactly 1 minute later he was able to take a pass from Walls and drill it home to regain the 3 goal cushion. The rest of the second was quiet until Mustangs forward Miguel Vaca received two misconduct yellow-cards in 2 minutes. The Wave quickly capitalized on the momentum when defenseman Jonathan Greenfield scored his second goal of the season to take another 4-goal lead.
Greenfield got the Wave on the board again in the third quarter 10 minutes in when Randoncic had another great feed to put the Mustangs in a deeper hole. The Mustangs started to gain some momentum of their own but Milwaukee's Banks did his best to stifle the momentum with his second goal of the night to make the score 8-2 Milwaukee. Never a team to give up when things get rough, Chicago had a valiant comeback attempt in the last 6 minutes of the contest. Omar Santillan got things started on the penalty kill when Guilherme Veiga set him up for his 9th goal of the season to cut the score to 8-3. Stewart got involved in the scoring yet again with 1 minute to go in the game and just 20 seconds later, Wilo scored his second of the night on a shootout to make the score 8-5. Unfortunately for Chicago, it was a case of too little, too late as the Wave came out clicking in every facet of the game from the very beginning and the initial deficit was just too much to overcome.
