Mustangs Host Tulsa Sunday
January 16, 2015 - Major Arena Soccer League (MASL)
Chicago Mustangs News Release
Hoffman Estates, IL- The Chicago Mustangs, proud members of the Major Arena Soccer League (www.MASLSoccer.com), will host the Tulsa Revolution this Sunday, January 18 at the Sears Centre Arena in Hoffman Estates at 3pm. This will mark Chicago's second matchup with Tulsa in 2 weeks.
The Mustangs defeated the Revolution 16-2 January 3rd at the Sears Centre Arena and they are looking to come out with the same type of focus and energy to get back on track after losing to the Milwaukee Wave last weekend 8-5 and snapping a 5-game winning streak. The Mustangs are 7 goals away from reaching the century mark on the season while Tulsa is 7 goals away from 50 on the year. After a big letdown up north, it'll be an interesting matchup between a team fighting for their playoff lives and a team that is looking to find their identity and play the role of spoilers along the way. The Revolution will also be without a head coach as they released their Head Coach, David Yates, Wednesday afternoon so it will be worth keeping an eye on Tulsa's game plan.
TonCar 3 Keys of the Weekend!
1) Bounce back. This one is quite simple. In the midst of a playoff race and a game that Chicago came into with endless amounts of momentum on their side, the Mustangs lost a heartbreaker on the road to rival Milwaukee. It is important that Coach Gamboa and his players have a short memory and get back on track immediately. Sometimes, losing a big game like that provides the jolt a team needs to get hot at the right time.
2) Protect the ball. One of the main reasons for the early deficit in Milwaukee was that the Mustangs had several sloppy turnovers leading to an abundance of Wave opportunities. During Chicago's 5-game winning streak, they took good care of the ball and will need to get back into their groove and find their flow to continue on their playoff push.
3) Score early and often and don't look back. Much like Chicago's previous matchup with Tulsa and even their game against Milwaukee, the team that scored first and grabbed the momentum then controlled the game with ease. It will be important for the Mustangs to click early and, more importantly, not get complacent. Put the pedal to the metal and show the league that the loss to the Wave was an aberration. This team is much more dangerous when it keeps that edge.
Players to keep an eye on
Chicago Mustangs:
1. Matthew Stewart, Forward - Stewie had 2 goals in the comeback attempt at Milwaukee. While new to the team, Stewart has gelled with his teammates quickly and added a dangerous element to the offensive flow. In the last matchup with Tulsa, Stewart played an important role as he scored an impressive 4 points on 1 goal and 3 assists including setting up Hewerton with 2 of his 5 goals for the night.
2. Taylor Bond, Defense - In his last game against Tulsa, Bond was a busy man as he scored 3 points including 2 goals and an assist as well as a block. More importantly, Bond was extremely active on the back end making life frustrating for Revolution attackers.
Tulsa Revolution:
1. Lucas Bunster Almeida, Midfielder - Almeida is Tulsa's leading scorer with 9 goals and 10 assists. In Tulsa's last game, Almeida scored the lone 2 goals to extend his point streak to 8 games including a goal in their matchup with Chicago. While there is not a lot of firepower within the Revolution offense, Almeida is a big constant that they can build around.
2. Michael Poneys, Forward - Poneys is the other big bopper for Tulsa. He scored a goal in their last matchup with the Mustangs and has 10 goals and 5 assists on the year. Poneys had a point in every game this year before being blanked by Missouri last weekend and he will surely be looking to regain his form against Chicago.
