Murray Named to 2014-15 AHL All-Rookie Team
April 8, 2015 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins News Release
WILKES-BARRE, Pa. - The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins, in conjunction with American Hockey League, have announced the goaltender Matt Murray has been named to 2014-15 AHL All-Rookie Team, as voted by coaches, players and media in each of the league's 30 member cities.
Murray has rewritten the AHL record books during his first-year of professional hockey. From Feb. 3 to Feb. 8, the 20-year-old held Penguins opponents off the scoreboard for 304 minutes and 11 seconds, breaking the record set by Barry Brust of the Abbotsford Heat during the 2012-13 season.
A third-round draft pick (83rd overall) by the Pittsburgh Penguins in 2012 NHL Draft, Murray is 23-9-3 in 37 appearances for Wilkes-Barre/Scranton this season and currently leads the league with a 1.54 goals-against average, a .941 save percentage and 11 shutouts. His 11 shutouts are the most by a rookie goaltender in the AHL's 79-year history.
Murray has been named CCM/AHL Player of the Week twice and was CCM/AHL Goaltender of the Month in both February and March. The native of Thunder Bay, Ont., is only the second player in league history to earn the honor in consecutive months (Philippe Sauve, Hershey - 2002).
Murray becomes the fifth Penguins player and second goaltender to be selected to the AHL Rookie Team, joining Toby Petersen (2000-01), Michel Ouellet (2003-04), John Curry (2007-08) and Alex Goligoski (2007-08).
