Delmarva Shorebirds News Release
GREENSBORO, N.C. - Despite hitting three more home runs, the Delmarva Shorebirds could not keep the Greensboro Grasshoppers off of the scoreboard in an 11-4 loss at NewBridge Bank Park on Wednesday afternoon. The Shorebirds finished the series knocking seven home runs in three games.
Catcher Alex Murphy took over the team lead in home runs with his fourth and fifth dingers of the season to extend his streak of reaching base safely to 22 games. Steve Laurino also added to the effort with his second homer of the campaign.
The Grasshoppers (21-25) took control of the game in the second inning with a five-run outburst against Shorebirds starter Cristian Alvarado. He would bounce back to make it through five innings, allowing five earned runs while striking out four.
The Shorebirds (26-19) responded with Murphy's first homer of the game in the fourth, but Greensboro came right back with one more run in the bottom half.
The closest Delmarva got to catching its opponent came in the top of the fifth when Laurino's solo homer preceded an RBI single by DJ Stewart, who finished the day 2-for-4. The day wrapped up a successful series for Stewart, as he hit .500 (5-for-10) with a home run and three walks in the three-game set.
The 'Hoppers then pulled away late with a run in the sixth, three more in the seventh and one more for good measure in the eighth.
Delmarva returns home to begin a seven-game homestand with a Thursday night contest against the Lakewood BlueClaws. The night will feature a Spicer Bros. Construction Inc. hat giveaway to the first 500 fans. Reid Love (2-3, 3.67) is scheduled to start for the Shorebirds opposite Harold Arauz (1-3, 3.38). First pitch at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium is set for 7:05 p.m.
