
Big Fourth Inning Sends Kannapolis to 12-3 Win over Legends

A six-run fourth inning broke the game open, and the Kannapolis Intimidators went on to a 12-3 win over the Lexington Legends in front of 5,121 fans Wednesday at Whitaker Bank Ballpark.
Kannapolis scored two runs in the second inning on a single by Cody Daily, a triple by Grant Massey and a single by Landon Lassiter. A two-run homer by Johan Cruz in the third inning gave the Intimidators a 4-0 lead.
A bases-loaded walk to Roman Collins put the Legends on the board in the in third, but Kannapolis sent 10 batters to the plate in the fourth. All six runs scored after two outs.
Zach Fish drew a leadoff walk, and after Matt Ditman relieved starter Nolan Watson for Lexington, Daniel Gonzalez singled. Frank Califano struck out, and Danny Mendick lined out to second baseman D.J. Burt. Cruz struck out on a ball in the dirt, but reached base when catcher Chase Vallot threw past first for an error. Fish scored on the play, and Gonzalez went to third. Daily's bunt single scored Gonzalez as Cruz moved to second. After Cruz advanced to third on a wild pitch, Antonio Rodriguez struck out, but reached base on a second throwing error by Vallot as Cruz scored. Grant Massey doubled to left field, scoring two runs. Massey went to third on a wild pitch and scored on a single by Lassiter, giving Kannapolis a 10-1 lead.
The Intimidators added single runs in the sixth and seventh, and the Legends scored two in the bottom of the seventh on an RBI double by Marten Gasparini and a sacrifice fly by Xavier Fernandez to close out the scoring.
Michael Hill, a third baseman and catcher, was called on to pitch the ninth for Lexington and retired the side in order.
Kannapolis starter Johnathan Frebis (4-2) worked the first six innings and got the win.
Watson (1-5) was the losing pitcher.
The Legends open a four-game series against the Hagerstown Suns Thursday night in Hagerstown, Maryland. Game time is 7:05 p.m.
