Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins News Release

WILKES-BARRE, PA - Joe Mullen and Al Sims will not return as the head coach and assistant coach of the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins for the 2006-07 season, it was announced Wednesday by Pittsburgh Penguins General Manager Ray Shero.

"Joe and Al did a fine job after taking over the Penguins in midseason," said Shero. "Their hard work helped to carry on the job started by Michel Therrien and Mike Yeo in Northeastern Pennsylvania, and we thank them for their efforts."

Mullen took over as head coach on December 15 when Therrien and Yeo were promoted to Pittsburgh, guiding the team to a 30-17-3-5 record during the final 55 games of the American Hockey League season. Sims joined his staff on December 23.

"It's never easy to inherit a team in the middle of a season," said Wilkes-Barre/Scranton CEO Jeff Barrett. "Joe and Al made the most out of a tough situation, representing the Penguins with class."

Wilkes-Barre/Scranton finished the regular season with an overall record of 51-18-5-6, allowing the Penguins to capture their first East Division title. The Penguins defeated the Bridgeport Sound Tigers in the East Division Semifinals, four games to three, before falling in the East Division Finals to the Hershey Bears, four games to none.

A search for a new coaching staff will begin immediately.
