Kane County Cougars News Release
GENEVA, Ill. - Thanks to a strong start by Westin Muir and a three-run home run by Sherman Johnson, the Kane County Cougars claimed a 3-1 victory over the Cleburne Railroaders on Sunday afternoon at Northwestern Medicine Field.
In his sixth straight win, Muir (6-0) earned a second straight quality start. The local product allowed just one run on four hits across six innings of work with four strikeouts against three walks.
The Cougars (45-42) jumped out to a lead against Railroaders' (39-47) starter Garret Alexander (3-8). In the bottom of the second inning, BJ Lopez and Galli Cribbs started off the inning with back-to-back singles. After an Ernie De La Trinidad pop out, Sherman Johnson blasted a three-run homer onto the patio in right field. Johnson's 11th home run of the season put the Cougars ahead 3-0.
The Railroaders cut into the Cougars lead in the top of the fourth inning. Chase Simpson led off the frame with a double down the right field line before being pushed to third on a single by Hill Alexander. The next batter, Wyatt Mathisen, hit a fly ball deep enough for a sacrifice fly to score Simpson and make it 3-1.
After Muir, the Cougars bullpen combined to hold Cleburne scoreless over the final three innings. Jack Anderson and Mike Morin each pitched scoreless innings in the seventh and eighth innings respectively. In the ninth inning, Cleburne threatened against Cougars' closer Ryan Tapani. Kacy Clemens drew a one out walk before Chase Simpson doubled to put the tying runs in scoring position. However, Tapani slammed the door with a strikeout of Eddie Hernandez and a Chuck Taylor pop out to preserve a 3-1 victory.
Following an off day, the Cougars will host the Lincoln Salt Dogs for three games at Northwestern Medicine Field beginning on Tuesday, August 23rd. Promotions for the upcoming series include a Taco Tuesday on August 23rd and a Thirsty Thursday presented by Miller Lite on August 25th. For tickets call 630-232-8811 or visit kccougars.com/tickets.
