Mudcats Take Series from Dash in Thriller

ZEBULON, NC - After seeing an eight-run lead erased by Winston-Salem, the Carolina Mudcats rallied with two in the bottom of the ninth to win the game and the series 10-9 in front of 2,298 on Sunday afternoon at Five County Stadium.

Clayton Ehlert (1-0) picked up the win in relief despite. The loss goes to Nick McCully (0-1).

Jake Lowery and Jeremie Tice provided the spark for the Mudcats offense. Lowery blasted a two-run shot off the line scoreboard in right field, and drove in his third RBI of the day with a double in the ninth. Tice notched two doubles, and drove in three.

The Dash scored nine unanswered over the final four innings to erase an eight run deficit before the Mudcats made the final rally. Trailing 9-8 with two outs and runners at the corners, Jake Lowery doubled on a line drive down the left field line to tie the game. Left fielder Brady Shoemaker misplayed a pop-up by Carlos Moncrief, and allowed the winning run to score.

Mudcats' starter Michael Goodnight took a no-hit bid into the sixth inning, but was chased by giving up four runs. The Dash got a lead-off single from Miguel Gonzalez and a double by Daniel Wagner to begin the frame.

Trayce Thompson singled in the first run of the rally, and a second scored on a fielding error. A two-run double by Shoemaker cut the score to 8-4. Michael Earley singled in a run before reliever Jose Flores recorded the final out.

Nick Ciolli cut the lead to two with a double in the seventh, setting up the exciting final frame. In the ninth, Winston-Salem loaded the bases with nobody out. A wild pitch scored one, and a pair of sacrifice flies by Ciolli and Thompson gave the Dash their only lead of the day.

The Mudcats host Wilmington Blue Rocks for the first of three at Five County Stadium on Monday, April 9, at 7:15 p.m. LH T.J.
