Winston-Salem Dash News Release
ZEBULON, NC (APRIL 8, 2012) - The Dash battled back from an eight-run deficit to take a one-run lead in the top of the ninth, but the Carolina Mudcats responded with a pair of runs in the bottom half of the inning to stun Winston-Salem 10-9 in the rubber match of a three-game series Sunday afternoon at Five County Stadium.
With his club down to its final strike, Jake Lowery doubled down the right field line against Dash closer Nick McCully (0-1) to tie the game at nine apiece. Carlos Moncrief then sent a pop up down the left field line that Brady Shoemaker and Marcus Semien could not catch. Shoemaker was charged with an error, and the Mudcats had a bizarre walk-off win that handed Winston-Salem its first season-opening series loss since 2006.
Carolina starter Michael Goodnight took a no-hitter into the sixth inning, which is when the Dash's rally began. Winston-Salem sent nine men to the plate in the sixth. Trayce Thompson started the scoring with an RBI single that, along with a fielding error, gave the Dash their first two runs. Two batters later, Shoemaker doubled home a pair. Michael Earley's RBI single was the exclamation point on a five-run sixth.
In the seventh, the Dash (1-2) tacked on another run. Miguel Gonzalez led off the inning with a single and came around to score on a two-out double by Nick Ciolli.
In the ninth, Winston-Salem scored three runs, two of which were unearned. Winston's first run came in on a wild pitch by Clayton Ehlert (1-0). Ciolli and Thompson then hit back-to-back sacrifice flies to give the Dash their first lead of the afternoon.
For the first time in the series, Carolina scored first with a Tony Wolters RBI groundout in the first inning. He plated Tyler Holt, who led off the frame with a triple to right-center.
The Mudcats (2-1) extended their lead in the third inning. Dash starter Spencer Arroyo walked the bases loaded, and Jeremie Tice brought all three runners home with a double to dead center field. Lowery followed suit with a two-run homer, Carolina's first long ball of the series. Carolina added a run in the fourth and the fifth to take an 8-0 lead.
Out of the Dash bullpen, Jon Bachanov surrendered a fifth-inning run in his two and a third frames of work out of the bullpen. Behind Bachanov, Justin Collop set the Mudcats down in order in the seventh before stranding two runners in the eighth.
Following an off day Monday, the Dash continue their season-opening six-game road trip with a three-game set at Frederick. Tuesday's series opener begins at 7 p.m. from Harry Grove Stadium, with right-hander Ryan Buch on the hill for the Dash. Pre-game coverage on wsdash.com kicks off at 6:45 p.m.
The Dash open up their home schedule Friday night against Carolina at BB&T Ballpark. First pitch is set for 7 p.m. For more information or to purchase tickets, visit wsdash.com.
