Mudcats Score Early, Wallop Nationals

ZEBULON, NC - The Carolina Mudcats erupted for seven runs in the first inning, and never looked back in a 9-2 rout of the Potomac Nationals in front of 3,882 on Friday night at Five County Stadium.

The Mudcats (17-16) sent 10 to the plate against the Nationals (13-18), with the first seven hitters reaching safely. The barrage was highlighted by five doubles and a three-run blast by Jake Lowery.

Kyle Winters (1-5) took the loss for Potomac. The right-hander allowed a career-high nine runs on 10 hits in four-and-two-thirds innings. He finished with four strikeouts.

Dale Dickerson (3-2) was awarded the win after tossing two scoreless innings. He allowed one hit and struck out four.

Mudcats' starter Michael Goodnight held Potomac to one run on four hits in three innings. Goodnight was hit by a line drive comebacker, and was taken out of the game with two outs in the fourth inning.

Carolina's bullpen combined for the final five-and-a-third innings.

The Mudcats began the first inning romp by back-to-back doubles by Tyler Holt and Tony Wolters for a 1-0 lead. Carlos Moncrief drew a walk, and Jesus Aguilar doubled home Wolters for a 2-0 score. Lowery muscled a line drive over the right field wall for a 5-0 lead. Anthony Gallas and Ronny Rodriguez each followed with a double.

The first out came on a ground ball by Justin Toole. Gallas scored for a 6-0 Mudcats lead. Tyler Cannon drove in the seventh run with a groundout to short.
