THE HILLCATS: Last night, the Hillcats lost to the Wilmington Blue Rocks 7-2...The 'Cats took the series two 2-1...RHP Gus Schlosser lost his second straight start giving up four runs, two earned, on nine hits in seven innings...He walked no one and struck out five...The game was tied at 1-1 in the top of the third, but the Blue Rocks regained the lead in the bottom of the third and never gave it back...Lynchburg is 18-13 and is still in first place in the Carolina League Northern Division...
VS. WINSTON-SALEM: This weekend marks the first time the Hillcats play the Dash this season...The Dash were the only team Lynchburg had yet to play entering this series...Both teams currently sit in first place in their divisions...Last year, Winston-Salem won the season series 12-8...
BATTLE TO BE THE BEST: The Winston-Salem Dash currently hold the best record in the Carolina League at 20-11, which is two games better than the Hillcats first place record of 18-13...The two teams face off head-to-head for the first time this weekend for a three-game series...The Hillcats will have a chance to take back the top spot in the circuit...
POWER HOUSES: The Dash and Hillcats enter tonight with the highest home run totals in the league by a far...Winston-Salem leads the league with 35 and Lynchburg is next with 30...The Carolina Mudcats are next with 19...The league as a whole has hit 160 round trippers...The 65 hit by the Dash and Hillcats make up just over 40 percent of the eight-team league total...
BY AIR AND GROUND: The Hillcats committed three errors last night in Wilmington in the 7-2 loss...They committed six errors total in the three-game series, including three on Tuesday night...Four of the miscues were throwing errors and two fielding...Entering that series, Lynchburg held the second best fielding percentage in the circuit...Currently, they rank fifth...
CLOSER THAN THE SCORE: Lynchburg had the tying run on base in the top of the seventh inning with nobody out...OF Kyle Rose entered to pinch-run for OF Robby Hefflinger...Four pick-off attempts later around one pitch to the plate, and Rose was caught at first leaning ahead to second...It was the first time that a Hillcat runner had been straight picked off at first this season with attempting to advance to second base...The 'Cats would not score that inning and went on to give a run in the seventh and three more in the eighth to fall by a five-run margin...
STREAK FOR THE CASH: SS Nick Ahmed extended his current hit-streak to 10 games last night with a 1-for-3 effort...It is the longest streak by a Hillcat this season, and is tied for the fifth best streak in the Carolina League this year..The top streak is held by Winston-Salem's INF Marcus Semien at 16 games, that streak is current heading into this series...Ahmed has only one multi-hit game in during his streak...He is 11-for-39 (.282) with four doubles and a home run, which makes up 45 percent of his extra-base hits this season...
WHO?: OF Mycal Jones was added to the Lynchburg roster yesterday, sent from Double-A Mississippi where he was hitting .141 (12-for-85) through 28 games...He did not meet the team on the road in Wilmington and joins his new clubhouse tonight at home...Jones last played in the Carolina League as a Myrtle Beach Pelican in 2010, when the Pelicans were the Braves Hi-A affiliate...Spent all of last season with Mississippi...Hit .252 with seven home runs and 36 RBI in 100 games...Also stole 17 bases, which tied for second on the club behind current Atlanta shortstop Tyler Pastornicky...
TONIGHT'S OPPOSING PITCHER: RHP Ryan Buch was drafted in the eighth round of the 2009 draft by the White Sox out of Monmouth University...Made his debut with Rookie-level Great Falls in 2009, went 1-2 with a 3.38 ERA in 16 relief appearances...Began the 2010 season in the bullpen for Low-A Kannapolis...Posted a 3.44 ERA through 14 appearances...Was then transferred to Rookie-level Bristol to join their rotation...Went 2-1 with a 2.45 ERA in four starts and was recalled to Kannapolis where he started the rest of the season...Went 4-3 with a 3.02 ERA...Returned to Kannapolis in 2011...Went 4-3 with a 3.65 ERA...Struck out 45 batters in 44.1 innings pitched...Called up to Winston-Salem in May...Made his Hi-A debut last year in Lynchburg May 24...Pitched six innings, gave up one run on seven hits and two walks while striking out five, but didn't earn a decision...Faced the Hillcats again August 15 in Winston-Salem...Went five innings, allowing one run on five hits and a walk, striking out two and got the win...This season, he is 2-2 with a 5.61 ERA...Makes his first start against the Hillcats tonight...
