Carolina Mudcats News Release

Zebulon, N.C. - Erik Gonzalez shined in his debut and Tyler Naquin homered for the second straight night as the Carolina Mudcats raced past the Winston-Salem Dash for an 8-2 win on Wednesday night at BB&T Ballpark. The Mudcats (17-14, 39-62) matched their season-long winning streak by claiming their fourth straight triumph.

Buoyed by a six-run second inning, Shawn Morimando (7-9) held Winston-Salem to two runs on three hits over six innings. The outing was the southpaw's third straight win.

Bryan Blough (8-8) allowed six runs on nine hits over six innings in the loss for the Dash (15-17, 53-49).

In the swing frame, Blough hit Paddy Matera with an inside pitch and walked Tony Wolters to start. Bo Greenwell then hit a sharp grounder towards the left side. Shortstop Joey DeMichele knocked the ball down, but Wolters beat the throw to second, loading the bases.

Gonzalez, in his first Carolina League at-bat, laced a double down the left field line to score Matera and Wolters for a 2-0 lead.

Alex Lavisky followed with a hit to score Greenwell. Tyler Naquin punched a hit into right field to drive in Gonzalez. In an attempt to cut down Lavisky going for third, right fielder Josh Richmond overthrew Chris Curley, allowing Lavisky to score on an error for a 5-0 lead. Joey Wendle finished the big inning with a single that scored Naquin.

The Dash cut into the lead with an RBI-single by DeMichele in the third and a homer from Curley in the sixth, but could draw no closer.

After escaping a bases-loaded, one-out jam in the seventh, Carolina put the game away in the ninth. Naquin belted a two-run shot into the right field bleachers for the final dagger.

The Mudcats continue their four-game series in Winston-Salem on Thursday, July 24th. First pitch against the Dash at BB&T Ballpark is set for 7:00 p.m. Carolina returns home, Thursday, August 1st for three games against the Frederick Keys.
