Big First Inning Dooms Pelicans in Series-Opener

The Myrtle Beach Pelicans (59-41, 19-12), Class-A Advanced affiliates of the Texas Rangers, surrendered five runs in the first inning Wednesday and never recovered, falling 7-2 against the Wilmington BlueRocks at Frawley Stadium. The Pelicans are 1-3 on the current road trip while Wilmington snapped a nine-game losing streak.

Pelicans starter Victor Payano recorded just one out and gave up all five first-inning runs on four hits and three walks. The left-hander took the loss (5-6) and saw his ERA climb to 6.35. Leonel Santiago (1-1) earned the win for the BlueRocks, turning in five innings of two-run, five-hit baseball.

Joe Maloney gave the Pelicans the early lead in the first inning on an RBI double. The BlueRocks sent 10 men to the plate in the gigantic last of the first. Jorge Bonifacio started the scoring with an RBI double after back-to-back walks from Payano. Jerad Schlehuber and Daniel Mateo added RBI singles. Ethan Chapman closed the rally with a sacrifice fly.

Paul Schwendel entered in the first inning and got the final two outs. The right-hander contributed 4.2 innings out of the bullpen and allowed two earned runs on five hits.

Jake Skole added an RBI single in the fifth inning as part of a two-hit performance.

Randol Rojas did not allow a run over three innings of work.

Daniel Hernandez relieved Santiago and registered five strikeouts over three scoreless innings.

The Pelicans and BlueRocks play the second game of the four-game series Thursday at Frawley Stadium. Right-hander Nick Martinez (8-6, 3.11) will be opposed by lefty John Lamb (4-9, 6.48). First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. and pregame coverage will begin at 6:50 on AM 1050 and FM 101.9 - Fox Sports in Myrtle Beach.

The first-half champion Pelicans return home on Monday, July 29, to take on the Winston-Salem Dash at TicketReturn.com Field at Pelicans Ballpark. It will be a Make a Splash Monday presented by HTC.
