Carolina Mudcats News Release
Zebulon, NC --- Gaby Hernandez worked six innings and drove in the eventual game-winning run as the Carolina Mudcats defeated the Huntsville Stars 3-2 in the series opener at Five County Stadium on Tuesday night.
Hernandez (W, 2-0) allowed six hits over six frames en route to his second straight victory to pull the Mudcats (16-15) to within two games of first place Tennessee in the Northern Division. Huntsville (17-14) remained one game behind the Smokies, which also lost on Tuesday night.
Trailing 2-0 into the bottom of the fourth, Gaby Sanchez singled to start the inning and advanced to third on a double by Bryan Petersen. A wild pitch from Brae Wright (L, 6-9) scored Sanchez. Following a walk, Smelin Perez hopped a double past the third base bag to tie the game, then Hernandez followed with a sacrifice fly to right to score Brad Davis with the tie-breaking run.
Three Carolina relievers combined on the final three innings of shutout baseball with Chris Mobley (S, 19) notching his 19th save.
Willie Glen (6-2) will start Wednesday night's second game against Donovan Hand (1-3) at 7:15 PM ET.
