JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - In a game that featured five-run innings for each team, the ball bounced the Jacksonville Suns' way in the end as the BayBears fell short in a 9-8 shootout on Tuesday at the Baseball Grounds.

With the score knotted at 8-8 in the bottom of the ninth, James Tomlin tripled off the top of the fence in left-center, just out of the reach of a leaping Cyle Hankerd and just inches short of a walk-off homer. Tomlin wouldn't need to hit it out to touch the dish though as Ivan DeJesus, Jr. singled him home in the very next at-bat off Vince Bongiovanni (2-3) to lift the Suns (47-54, 14-17) to victory.

Trailing 5-1 after three, the BayBears (42-58, 13-17) didn't shy away from having to come back late. They chipped the Jacksonville lead to 5-3 upon entering the eighth inning when the BayBears exploded for five runs thanks to a two-run single by Hankerd and a throwing error by Eduardo Sierra (5-1) which opened the door for three unearned runs.

The jubilation didn't last long for the BayBears as Jose Marte spoiled the efforts of Cody Evans, who worked three perfect innings, by allowing a game-tying, three-run dong to Juan Gonzalez. Bryan Byrne had a solid night for the BayBears by knocking three hits and scoring three times. Matt Green started and allowed five runs (three earned) over four innings.

On Wednesday, the BayBears will seek revenge as they send Tony Barnette (5-7, 4.24) to the mound at 12:05 p.m. The BayBears return home on Sunday, July 27 to start a five-game series against the Tennessee Smokies at 6:05. Call (251) 479-BEAR for tickets or log on to www.mobilebaybears.com.

BEAR CLAWS

Former BayBear Emilio Bonifacio was dealt to the Washington Nationals on Tuesday in exchange for relief pitcher Jon Rauch. The walk-off victory for Jacksonville was their first this season. At one point, the BayBears' pitching staff retired 14 straight hitters between the third and eighth innings.
